You may be interested to read about the MESH Net which was recently showcased on the Keiser Report.

Thanks, I'll check it out!

That looks like a good solution for peer-to-peer or point-to-point transactions, but I don't think it's a panacea for loss of Internet. At some point this mesh would need a gateway into the Internet. It would make it easier for individuals who can afford satellite connections to the Internet to share them across an area though. This would definitely be a complimentary product so long as someone somewhere can reach the outside.

It is not just point to point but can piggy back. The major node that is spoken of can handle a 10km area.

I understand that, but a 10KM coverage area isn't going to get you very far unless you have a hop every 10km that eventually gets you to a country or individual with Internet access. They were specifically talking about a mesh network where people can message and transact locally. Even if you transact locally on the mesh, it still eventually has to hit a node with an Internet gateway if you want to reach the Internet. In this particular example, you are talking about a city at 5000ft elevation in the middle of a landlocked country with all access to the Internet cut off. The mesh network is a great idea for people to communicate within that mesh coverage area, but you still eventually have to jump onto the Internet via a gateway if you wish to reach the outside world.

I remember once when I was there the same thing happened for a day only I think it was so those satellite based solutions are a great step forward and can be of so much benefit in developing countries especially

One switch and the whole country is shut off from the world. Scary indeed. :-)
