Homecoming Mums! ... Defining Texas Culture & Tradition
"Mom! Homecoming is in Two Weeks and I need a mum." My daughter says to me.
What?!? What's a mum? I'm your mom...
Homecoming is in two weeks?!? She's a freshman, too young for hot dates!
She's going with her friend who is changing school districts after Homecoming.
Homecoming is a HUGE deal here! It's a week long affair.
First there is a Pep Rally. Then a Parade. Then a BonFire. Then a Texas High School Football Game. Then a School Dance.
And Mums aren't just the little coloured chrysanthemum corsages or boutonnière from my youth.
Nope. Not at all.
In Texas it's a status symbol. And a great DIY craft project for The Workshop.
Mums represent school pride. Go Mustangs!
They look like they could be be pinned on a parade float with all the colours, ribbons, & bling.
Texas youth often customise them with their favourite extracurricular and keep them as a trophy keepsake of their high school experience.
I don't want my daughter or others to feel left out of this Texas tradition. But right now I don't have $50+ for an over the top Mum. Michaels craft store is selling some for $90!!!
So with what is now ONE week until homecoming we are making our own "moderately" over-the-top mums with ribbon & craft supplies we got from the Dollar Store.
She made one to commemorate her friend's last Homecoming in Marble Falls and is quite happy.
50% of the STEEM earnings from this post will be donated to Texas High Schools affected by Hurricane Harvey;
The Workshop will donate a minimum of $25 from Mum making class regardless of Steem Earnings.
