From Fingersik to “Saruman the Young” in Two Days: Pt. 2

Saruman the Young transformation step 1: The staff

Yesterday I shared with you my whole day’s work – the Saruman’s stuff. Even though I’m pretty confident, that people that actually know how Saruman’s stuff looked like would recognize it, it alone is nowhere close to something that could be called outfit. That’s why there is step 2…

Saruman the Young transformation step 2: The robe

Creating something that would look exactly like his robe was impossible for me. Nor I had the money to buy the actual robe. Also my newly acquired crafting skill level 2 was insufficient and when it was supported by my aesthetics feeling that is deep down below level 0… I simply had to call for help. And what a great help mom turned out to be!

The goal was simple. Let’s create something that will resemble the Saruman’s robe. We’ve searched the whole wardrobe to assemble components that might be able to imitate individual parts of the robe. This is what we came up with.

Gathering of the components

  1. Bed sheet
  2. Shirt
  3. Silver belt
  4. White trousers
  5. Cotton (at least I think lol…whatever it was it did the job)

Putting it all together

So first things first. White trousers and shirt are the core of the outfit. Even though I’d love to imitate the embroidery he has on his shirt, there was no way how to do it for me. Simple shirt and trousers had to do.

First I thought that I will have to cut through the Bed sheet in order to make it look like a robe, but at the end we managed to do so with just a little sewing together here and there

The silver belt is the essential element that makes the bed sheet to actually look like a robe. If I wanted to follow the Saruman’s look I would have it just around the shirt, but experimenting showed that it actually doubles the overall feeling of the outfit when it’s around the bed sheet too.

Saruman also had 2 rags snoozing freely from the belt. Those were recreated by the cotton.

Saruman the Young transformation step 3: Hair and beard

The stuff and robe are fine, but Saruman wouldn’t be Saruman without his signature white hair and beard. I could have of course bought peruke, but man, that would be lame. If you were wondering from the very beginning why I’m turning into “Saruman the Young” (and I hope you were!) this is why. I have been growing my beard and hair for a couple of months now. They are nowhere close to the imperiousness of Saruman’s actual software, but he too had to be young once and grow it from the scratch…The colouring wouldn’t be possible without my lovely friend! She has my eternal gratitude.

Behold! Saruman the Young!
