That's really cool...great bucklers! It's a fascinating article...
Would the choice of a buckler, over a larger shield, also depend on the weapon that you are carrying, and also what type of weapon your opponent is carrying? And hence whether it was early, mid, or late middle ages, or even renaissance?

Well to be honest we dont know a lot about the use of bucklers.
They where primarily a civilian weapon, and when used in war only for people who was not supposed to be in hand to hand combat, such as archers (we know a little about that from armyledgers)
regarding the time period they were replaces in the rennaisance by parrying daggers because they are not that effective against thrusting weapons such as rapiers.
regarding whether it was chosen over a larger shield, I think if you were going to war you would probably get yourself a real shield (if you could) whereas in civilian life a 5-10 kg shield is simply to big and bulky to lug around. a buckler weighs around 1-1.5 kilos and is app. 30 cm in diameter so its much more manageable
