Novavax finally gets FDA authorization for its new coronavirus vaccine.
As I said before, it is already covered by the previous ACIP guidance, so it should be available soon.
My recommendation always is to get whatever vaccine is available.
Novavax is a fine vaccine.
This is the only non-mRNA coronavirus vaccine available in the US at this time if that is important to you. It is a protein subunit vaccine- the HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines are also protein subunit vaccines. It is an effective and well-tolerated platform.
Novavax doesn't need the cold storage, so for places without the infrastructure for the mRNA vaccines it is a plus.
I'm a bit skeptical of Novavax's data, it was similar to what we saw with the mRNA vaccines in animals. But there's no downside if you can find it. So far the safety profile is good, though of course we just have less data about novavax.
I imagine its real payoff will be globally to replace J&J and Astrazeneca and the inactivated virus vaccines. As it is clearly superior to all of those in the immunological data. And so far no safety issues like the TTS.
