Keeping the lines of communication open, not giving up, and being available are important in the pre-counselling period because the counsellor is then ready to light the fire and to strike when the iron is hot. Here, too, it is important to determine when the client is ready to move out of the pre-counselling stage and into the counselling stage. The purpose of the pre-counselling period is only to set the stage for the all important process of getting the client to "do something". During thevpre-counselling period what the counsellor does is most important, but in the counselling period the most important thing is the client's action in taking concrete steps to help himself.
