Corruption!- Does it sound familiar and deep rooted?

in #corruption7 years ago (edited)

Whenever the word CORRUPTION is mentioned and then discussed, we get over a million ideas of how it thrives in our society, and when I say Society, I mean Nigeria and this begs the question:- Is Corruption a Nigerian?

I think yes mostly and many people will be quick to say yes as it looks like it is a wonder boy born with a silver spoon and hence has the opportunity to access places unattainable by the common man.

When I searched the word corruption through one of these search engines, it gave 181,000,000 results and after the first two stories, the third was tagged "Corruption in Nigeria".
Now this is on the internet and I am sure if you scroll down more and turn the pages, it will be all about Nigeria and this makes me just wonder.

Don't get me wrong, corruption is everywhere and happens every second. But why is it so familiar, and spells like a name so familiar as well?

Corruption wines and dines with the mighty men and women in secret and that was supposed to be the case, but in Nigeria, Corruption is suddenly King and even robes itself as a clergy man and officiates from the highest pulpit.

The Nigeria of our dream is more like a far fetched one that more and more looks farther from the dream we have as a people particularly and as a collection of individually different people in general.
I will never stop talking about that period in the history of Nigeria when things worked and the people were sane and full of dignity and corruption was frowned upon and persons found wanting are made to face the music.

There were days back then when we have respect for rule of law and a "Name" meant more than money but today, the way the politicians have modeled and re-branded "Criminality", no one wants to be found "taking last" and everybody is suddenly an embodiment of the devil himself. We have become the people who now religiously practice the "if you can't beat them, join them" phrase and "we could get beaten to death by family members if we fail to embezzle monies while in office of authority."

In fact, we have perfected the corruption art and act that the learner most often becomes the teacher, with the teacher becoming more like a University professor.
Nigeria is a country blessed with so much natural resources and manpower and her biggest undoing has been a sect of the manpower, less than 1 freaking percent actually.

The greedy quest to be a Nigerian leader, leads these persons to dungeons deep down in their hearts with really sharp fangs and claws and when it is done, corruption becomes like a carrot and like the Easter bunny, the chase is unrestricted and like cancer, the rot keeps spreading to every section of the economy leaving a trail of dirt and death in its wake.
It is really so pathetic that the below lines credited to one Mr. Agazie hits the nail straight-

"Corruption is well and thriving well in Nigeria without signs of letting up because (1) it seems to be everywhere, indeed encouraged; and (2) Nigerians are a greedy people with an insatiable appetite for material possessions fueled by a desire to follow their corrupt leaders’ footpath."

image.png

On various social media platforms, major discussions are started on daily basis touching major sectors of the economy that has become a living hell and discomfort to the people when it ordinarily should have been a blessing and a process for learning and growth.
More sad is that, the general public who form 99% of the robust economy that we once could be proud of has become both predators and prey in their own hands and have resorted to taking it out on themselves.
We deserve much more respect than is meted us as a people and whenever we push for the right things, we are called rebels and even called 'ordinary Nigerians' with no understanding of what it entails to be a Politician in Nigeria.

I will not just bother to write too long about the fails and losses we experience as a people but will simply add on a more lighter note,

What will happen if we eventually do get rid of these corrupt leaders?
What will it take to get these leaders out? Will the people ever get back to a Nigeria of pride?
Can the people live in a society where moral and good character thrive above the pursuit of material gains?
Against our better judgement that Corruption has come to stay, can something uniquely different be experienced?

The very core sectors of the thriving Nigerian society has been painted corrupt and this is done with so much disregard for what is right, and the masters of this crazy act display their corrupt nature and are becoming crusaders against all that is good for the purpose of making everyone a corrupt Nigerian or a product of a corrupt Nigeria.

I think we have become too corrupt with the influx of corrupt leaders and policies and have in some ways lost the will to live right and do that which is right.
Like a wealthy neighbor, Corruption moved into our community and is gradually buying up every property therein with a sole aim of making us all tenants.

Only if the people could unite and fight it. Corruption has no race, sex, tribe or religion. But most of the time these are the things used to divide the people. They (the corrupt politicians) know this, they know once our unity is in pieces that we can never fight for what is ours. A united people is a threat to the power they wield.

A people so deprived now sees Corruption as an exception to the Rule. They will continue to use their ill gotten wealth to fight us into accepting corruption in totality. The only way is through a united front that do not respect the laws of the land and do not survive based on what the state has provided. Thanks

Some people really thinks that is the way it should be. They beg for crumbs, you'd see them fighting during elections. Maiming and killing one another to get "their" candidate into power. A candidate that won't pick their call once they ascend into power. It is a vicious cycle, like watching a horror movie, you know the actor would die when he opens that door (you've watched the scene before) still he goes ahead and opens that door and gets eaten by the zombie. It is a sad affair.

Really sad and I hate for the young ones to be caught up in this dead creativity space. I am doing my best to create a free world inside a corrupt world and the picture looks great already.

Cryptocurrency has no central power or control. You are doing a heck of job in spreading the gospel. Now a jobless youth could earn a living when he manages to charge his mobile phone and get data to come online. Isn't that wonderful? That's the beauty of the cryptosphere, a sphere the corrupt government can't control. That is why many of them are foot dragging into making it legitimate. It'd wrestle some power away out of their greedy itchy fingers.

It sure is a way out, but we still seek to make it more useful in the fight against joblessness and unemployment. We are now using our platform to launch other ventures. It is a full package and we are excited at what we see.

Well, I've earned money through other avenues, but I must confess this is a novel way of getting some money. Who would've thought this was possible when thousands are lost in ponzi world seeking for a way out due to hardship orchestrated by bad governance? But I'm happy to see new usernames daily on here. Each person is still an early investor. I heard of bitcoin first in 2011. Surprisingly I didn't think much of it, but then the same could be said ten years from now. People would remember with nostalgia when bitcoin was $8k or steem still a single digit cryptocurrency. The future is an exciting one and I'm happy most of us are in the take off point of the great revolution. I see people say the revolution won't be televised, but cryptocurrency's revolution will not only be televised but it'd be live-streamed!

Hahaha.. This one is really being Live Streamed no doubt

People are united but the only corrupt one. They make laws which suit them. it's a bitter fact

@kamchore, I am glad you agree.

@ejemai .....yes corruption is a wide term. you are absolutely right, corruption occurs when state institution become weak, law and order is not properly implemented.

You are right, but it is sad how law and order has become undervalue because some few have placed monetary value on it.

Corruption is a really deep term but I think its more like a disease that gets easily contacted when the legal and law enforcement system are not effective.

If Law enforcement and justice was effective, corruption will die a quick death and everyone will be forced to have a change of mindset

I agree but then, these custodians have rewritten the pages of the law to suit their criminal enterprises and they use it to prosecute good. Thanks for stopping by

very bitter but practical and real point of view @ejemai

yes it's so. you are abs right @akintunde

Hmmm....... Fighting corruption in Nigeria is one herculean task. Who will even fight it? Is it the mothers who encourage their own daughters to go and make money by following the old and dirty politicians or the daddies who encourage their sons to do whatever their 'mates' are doing to get money. If you don't have money, most families would term you an outcast but will celebrate the crook in their midst who has money. From the pulpit to the pew, corruption reigns. My brother, I see fighting corruption as a lost cause already, God will help us.

Fighting corruption is a lost cause no doubt, but creating a world where people are accountable for their action is possible. We as individuals must first create a fantasy that we have it covered and then tow the line of sanity and accountability. Corruption is a thing of the mind and when you make it not about the greed, you will be the better for it. Thanks as always for your very insightful contribution.

@ejemal Great post and very interesting point of view. I personally have come to realized that corruption escapes...nobody. Thanx to Wikileaks and the powerful speed of information transfer that the internet gives us, we can agree that corruption is so ever prevalent. I'm so glad for this platform and the great potential of decentralization block-chain. Best wishes. :)

The blockchain is immutable and open for all to see and i believe it has a bog role to play in helping us have a truly free and responsible society. Thanks

You know what hurts the most about corruption; the fact that it is on every sphere and in every facet of our life.. Recently at the law school, some raised issues about having to bribe for accomodation that we already paid hefty fees for, in the university you hear of union leaders having stupid projects to just siphon funds and on and on... It is everywhere so in as much as the major blame is on the government because if there was enough to go around we wouldnt have so much issues but the people to continue the cycle... this is one issue i can go on and on about so let me just stop here

I understand @tolarnee, the discuss on corruption can really go long an talking about it gets me upset as well knowing that we are made to pay so much for everything because some few criminally insane persons keep stealing the Nation's resources.
The schools are a hotspot for corruption, lecturers collect money for grades, admin collect monies for registration and accommodation etc. It is just sad how we all are taken for a ride by a select few criminals.

your stance on corruption really touch my hearts. you have clear and concise view on corruption @ejemai have a nice time.

You are absolutely right. Corruption is deeply penetrated in our society. You can't do your right job without giving bribe or some thing like. Sad & bitter facts, but it's ture:(
