Starbucks is about to launch a blockchain program to transparently track its coffee bean supply chain. The program will track coffee beans from Costa Rica, Colombia, and Rwanda. From the Starbucks website: “Over the next two years, we will look to demonstrate how technology and innovative data platforms can give coffee farmers even more financial empowerment.” ~ Kevin Johnson, Starbucks CEO.

This program will run for the next two years. Sustainable Coffee Challenge will be tracking the results and how useful blockchain technology is to the coffee farmers.

Now, if only its tax payments could be so transparent. Starbucks has admitted to acquiring a special, low rate of tax in Holland for its subsidiary there and its tax problems in the UK are well-known and often protested. So it's not a surprise that here in the US, Starbucks has two lobbyists who worked in the IRS. Mary Baker worked for the IRS for four years; her last position there was manager of the Tax Shelter Analysis Office at the IRS. And while Karishma Page was only an intern, the relationships made during any kind of government service often help secure influence.

Starbucks also recently announced it has achieved equal pay across race and gender in the United States. Prior to this initiative (that's already mandated by their subsidiaries in Iceland, Germany, and the UK) Starbucks got away with pay inequity because of the typical pay secrecy that most corporations follow -- illustrating another area in need of the type of transparency blockchain technology can provide.
