CANADA: Corporate welfare is bad

Here’s what’s happening. Maple Leaf is building a new chicken processing plant for $606 million (https://taxpayer.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e436226d501953d6bf1068db8&id=a798b6a741&e=63a8f4a22a). The Trudeau government is handing over $28 million in corporate welfare for the project. The Ford government is handing over another $34.5 million.

It’s infuriating to see corporate welfare waste taxpayers’ money on multination corporations such as Bombardier, General Motors and Maple Leaf. These big businesses don’t need the money. Want proof? The McCain family, which owns Maple Leaf, is the 16th richest family in the country with a net worth of $4.5 billion, according (https://taxpayer.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e436226d501953d6bf1068db8&id=51c2d00c26&e=63a8f4a22a) to Canadian Business.

It gets worse – much worse.

Maple Leaf is firing 300 people as it closes older plants and replaces it with the new plant.

Think about that.

Taxpayers are giving Maple Leaf $62.5 million and 300 people are losing their jobs.

That’s not right.

This is part of a pattern from the Trudeau government, but here’s what Premier Doug Ford said.

Look, we get it, Ford is new. This deal was probably cooking before he got the job. But he was elected to cut government waste and he didn’t cut this waste. Worse, he’s praising it.

Ford works for Ontarians and Ontarians need to hold him accountable to make sure he never wastes taxpayers’ hard-earned money on this kind of corporate welfare again.
