Them bastards started long-distance trade between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley in Pakistan around 3000 BC. Who did they think was going to grow their food while on these trips?
Actually it likely have more to do with mono-culture, chemicals and GMO's. Along with other advances in technology the productivity in (USA) farming has more than doubled in the last 50 years. Combine this with billions in subsidies annually and the farm/farmer is forgotten with synthetically suppressed food cost.
