Indian prime minister Narendra Modi almost doubled the planet's tally of people that were locked down to prevent coronavirus spread on a single announcement on Tuesday.
According to Agence France-Presse, its strict order to reside at home with the nation's 1,3 billion people means that the global number of people locked down to about 2,6 billion–a third of the population. This is more people than even those who saw World War II alive.
A reported number of 425,000 were infected and 18,900 people were killed. Many more suspected of being infected but not confirmed. The accuracy of reported infections varies greatly from country to country because of political complications and the wide range of test policies in the country.
But, apart from these grim statistics, the effect of coronavirus on the human population in the shortest weeks since the earliest case occurred around the middle of November 2019 has been difficult to quantify at the daily level.
Global governments have responded in different ways, affecting approximately one in three people and affecting all aspects of transport, trade, social gatherings, and in many cases, the capacity to leave one's home.
"Lockdown" is not a technical term but is commonly used to describe anything from compulsory full quarantine to non-compulsory advice stopping businesses and activities or asking people to stay home, as Lindsay Wiley, a professor of health law at the Washington College of Law, said to Vox.
Those figures, of course, were gathered before the Chinese government started to cancel New Year's festivities in 2020 to avoid the virus spread.
Some of the most common human disasters involving humanity on this scale appears to be the Spanish Flu of 1918-19. While epidemiologically the situation is very different, one common point is the scale of its impact in comparison with the global population. The virus had infected one-third of the population, about 500 million at this time.
