Best Soup Making Tips and Tricks

in #cooking6 years ago

When I was making this yummy cheesy potato soup the other day, I was so grateful that all of the ingredients blended well together to make a flavorful, easy soup. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes, despite my best efforts, the flavor of a soup is pretty meh. Thankfully over the years, I have developed a few tricks that are sure to boost the flavor and create layers of unexpected flavor in every soup. So if you’re looking to make your soups superlative, here are a few tricks for you

Save Your Rinds
Parmesan, Cheese, Milk Product, Food, Ingredient, Eat
Waste not want not, right? I always stash my rinds in the freezer to be used at a later time to give a buttery, cheesy component to future soups. Throw your inedible parmesan rinds in ziplock bag and keep them in the freezer until you have a pot of soup or stew on the stove. The difference it makes in the broth is incredible.

Tomatos to the Rescue
Tomato Soup, Tomato, Soup, Sauce, Tomato Sauce, Food
Even if you aren’t looking for a soup heavy on tomato flavor, a spoonful of tomato sauce adds a bright, sweet component that’s sure to perk up all soups.

Soy Sauce Can Be a Game Changer
Sauce, Soy Sauce, Spoon, Tablespoon, Spice, Cook
Add a splash of soy sauce to your soups for a nice umami tone that your soup may be lacking If you do use soy sauce in your soups, be sure to limit the salt you would usually incorporate, as soy sauce is plenty salty.

I would have thought being from New Mexico, You would have mentioned New Mexico red or green chiles. They really amp up the flavor in soups!

I have a special soup for my beloved green chile, but i do happen to add new mexico red chile powder to everything for a bump of spice and flavor.

I have heard that soy sauce isn't that healthy for men.

I recently started doing the tomato sauce idea but never thought of the cheese rinds. That's a good one. I've been mimicking dumplings in soup by using pierogies and sometimes gnocchi. It started out as an experiment but ended up working really well so now I do it often. I Highly recommend trying it out :)

t looks super delicious!

nice! do you shred the rinds or put them whole?
I've been having an issue with cheese clumping up in the soup, sometimes it even turned rubbery and I had to chew it like a piece of dried leather.
(I followed your tip regarding using whole cheese blocks and shredding them myself)
