The Cranium Stadium

As always, before we get into this week’s challenge, I must first announce last week’s winner.

Winner from Week #2
@cygon

We actually had two people who were able to get both questions correct! The other Steemian who was able to get both questions correct was @macro-d. However, as @cygon was able to answer first, he will get half of the SBD earned from the post which is 0.17 SBD.

Answer to Question #1 (from Week #2)

For the first question, you had to find a hidden message in the following:

”Mario and Yoshi tried helping every friend or relative climb Everest, but elders with intensely thick hair yelled out unhappily.”

The answer was: “May the Force Be With You.”

How do you get that answer? Well, it is just the first letter of each word! It must have been too easy because everyone was able to get it correct! For getting this one correct, @hungry-nomad, @alshabaz, @yoghurt, @gduran, and @lexyflexy all got an upvote by me. So, at least you don’t go away completely empty-handed. :)

Answer to Question #2 (from Week #2)

The second problem was another story problem. It might have seemed fairly simple on the surface, but it was actually a somewhat involved problem. Here was the problem:

“Jack is rowing across a river. The river flows from the east at 233 cm/s. Jack points his canoe directly north and rows his canoe across the river at 4.8 km an hour. If the river is 2400 m wide, how long does it take Jack to cross the river, and how far away from his original position will he be when he reaches the other side?”

So, this problem had two part to it, and you had to get both parts correct in order to get it completely right.

The first part of the question was to find out how long it would take Jack to get across the river. You needed two bits of information to figure this out. First, you needed to know how wide the river was (2400 m), and secondly, you needed to know Jack’s speed (4.8 km/h). You just need to divide the distance by Jack’s speed. However, you need to make sure that the UNITS ARE THE SAME. I choose to convert 4.8 km/h into 4800 m/h. Dividing 2400 m by 4800 m/h gets you 0.5 hour (or 30 minutes).

For the second part, you need to know two distances, the distance across the river (2400 m) and the distance down river that Jack is carried. To figure out how far the river carried Jack, take the river’s speed (233 cm/s) and multiply it by the time it took Jack to travel across the river (30 min). However, once again, the units are messed up. You need to convert the 233 cm/s into m/min. Once you do that, you get 139.8 m/min. Then you can multiply that by 30 minutes to get 4,194 m.

That is NOT your final answer, though. That is how far east he is, but he also traveled north. So what is his distance to the northeast? For that, you need the good ol’ Pythagorean Theorem. It was easier to write out the work, so check out this picture:

Only two people got it completely right, and they were already mentioned, @cygon and @macro-d.

Without further ado, let’s move onto this week’s challenges!

Remember, to enter, you need to do the following:

  • Put your answer in a comment on this post. Please don’t say HOW you got the answer and spoil the fun for everyone else. :)
  • Upvote this post (that is where your reward will come from!)
  • Make sure to answer all parts of all questions
  • Each participant is allowed ONLY ONE entry. Only the most recent comment by each participant will be evaluated.

Optional but appreciated:

  • Resteem this post so that more Steemians can see it and increase the reward pool!

Rewards

Everyone who gets 1 out of the 2 challenges correct will get an upvote by me.

After post payout, I will give 50% of the SBD earned from the post to the winner (the first person to get both questions correct).

Most importantly, fun and a good mental activity to help your brain stay strong!

This Week's Problems

#1 - Decode This Message - Alphabet Shift

In this sort of code, each letter of the alphabet stands for another letter of the alphabet. However, for this code, I will make it easy: the alphabet is shifted. This means if “Y” in the code stood for “D”, then “Z” would stand for “E”. This is much easier than if it was random. And I will even put the spaces in the correct place for you.

Please do not cheat on this. Is there a way for me to find out if you just used something online to figure this out? No. I just hope that my fellow Steemians have a measure of dignity and honor.

The phrase is:

HETUDJI EV KDKIKQB IYPU

The second part of this question is:

To which movie does this phrase relate?

#2 - Solve the Problem on Light and Color

  • What are the primary colors of light? (Yes, you may look this up.)

  • Imagine that you are in a room made up of magenta-colored glass. In this room is an apple. Outside of the box in normal light, this apple looks pure red. If you are inside this glass room with the apple, and someone outside the room shines a pure blue light at the apple through the glass, what color does the apple appear to your eye?

Have fun and do your best!

You got the first question right, and you got part of the second question correct. For the explanation and this week's questions, go here. Thanks for playing!

Thank youu and congratulations to the winner !!

Question 1: Rodents of unusual size from the movie The Princess Bride

Question 2: Black

Awww! I didn't realize the primary colors part was a question! I'm amending my answer to Rodents of unusual size from the movie The Princess Bride for question 1 and red, blue, green, but the apple will appear black for question 2.

Nice job on the addition! Without this, you may have not gotten the award, but you won! I already transfered the SBD (which was 0.197 SBD this week). Try again this week - maybe you will win again! The post is here. (And I am trying to upvote your answer, but it won't let me...)
