My answer is: the police who came in was responsible for what happened to the woman. Nobody called the police before he came in (due to the noises he heard). He might have hit the neighbour at first and left the scene. Then to make it unsuspicious he went to the house without touching the body and called autopsy department not knowing the woman was still alive.
