She was a mess after losing her son: on total auto-pilot and walking alone amongst the dead with her pet walkers, her bf and his friend who were too high to save themselves and toddler from a zombie attack. Her innovation, of course, was to make those walkers harmless and use them as camouflage.
She always was efficient and she regained her cool as her sanity slowly returned, as she started hanging with the living again.

The 'embittered innovation' line got it for me. That first scene when she's wandering through the woods with the zombies-on-chains is creepy!
