This is normally a small tree, but occasionally you will find larger examples. Its grey/reddish-brown bark looks like it has been vertically shredded by a giant clawed monster. Early settlers took advantage of the strength of this tree's wood to make levers to move boulders as they went about clearing land and building stone walls.
