This tree is the tallest eastern hardwood, reaching up to 150 feet or more and a diameter measuring up to four feet. Water can rise from its roots to its top in less than an hour. It is a very valuable timber tree, as its wood stays strong while still able to grow rapidly. The tree has beautiful tulip-like flowers, which produce such a large amount of nectar it makes it the friend of the beekeeper. This tree is distinguished by an inverted "U" where branches emerge from the trunk.
