Ode To My G.I. Joe!

I remember out my backdoor, every day, we'd play for hours...with G. I. Joe,

We had the tanks and trucks, and right there in the dirt...we'd make the roads.

All my friends came to my house after school, we'd play forever...under that old tree,

And after dark we'd get the flashlights out to shine around the yard...so we could see.

We'd gather sticks and rocks, and shovel 'round the dirt...to make a bridge,

My momma yelled out the backdoor, son, your dinner...it's in the fridge.

Well all those years went by so fast, let me tell ya...oh, I don't know,

Dad put all my toys up in the attic, all but one...and that was G. I. Joe.

The other day, me and my Dad, we cleared the yard...to cut down that tree,

We cleared the sticks and rocks, and shoveled 'round the dirt...what's that I see?

A flood of memories filled my eyes, they welled right up...oh, it hurt me so,

And Momma yelled out the backdoor, son look there...is that your G. I. Joe?

One December, hey my friends, if you'll remember...it was really cold.

In that big snow, we lost all track of time and then...I couldn't feel my feet,

And when the snow changed into rain, we ran inside...and it turned back to sleet.

Then in the spring we found a ball and threw for hours...and I learned to throw,

And momma yelled out the backdoor, time for dinner, son...it's getting cold.

Written in similar style of the song Lyrics of Bobby Gentry's "Ode To Billy Joe"
