SteemOcean - Tracker of Good Whales

in #contest6 years ago

For those of you who have no idea what it is, steemocean.com is the initiative by our witness @ura-soul. Like any good project, steemOcean can only grow from now, so let’s give a review and help @ura-soul in perfecting steemOcean.

I’m going to list all the “not so good” things about steemOcean first, before moving to the “what’s good” about it. I’m pointing the “negative” things first because all of them are basically trivial things that do not disturb steemOcean main function and could be fixed easily in timely manner.

The “Not So Good” About SteemOcean.com

The static header and footer of the website.

Although look nice, the static header and footer can be disturbing when visitors are trying to scroll the website. The portion of the screen containing the data would become smaller. I prefer the header, along with the menu, and the footer are just scrollable like normal website.

The smartphone view is problematic

Continuing from the problem above, when I tried to use a smartphone to view the website, I got only a tiny viewable part, because of all the static parts of the website. See the example at the right, I only got one third of usable screen. Forgive me for the quality of the gif file, blame the app, don’t blame me. Lol.

The good things about steemocean.com

The static table header is a good choice

Unlike header and footer, static table caption / header is a good one to have. While we scroll the data, having the static header helps us quickly see what kind of data that we are seeing. Thumbs up to @ura-soul for having this.

The main function is AMAZING!

Now comes the good part. What does steemocean.com actually provide? It provides ranking of steemit users based on their voting or self-voting pattern. Why is this important? Because in this big ocean called steemit, all the minnows, new comers like myself, would like to get upvotes from bigger fishes such as @ura-soul, or even some whales. Yes, we follow people to read their beautiful and informative posts or because they are our friends. However, we also follow people because we expect them to recognize our existence and give us upvotes time to time. If getting upvotes is the main purpose, minnows need to follow the correct bigger fishes as not to waste time and energy.

Why follow a whale when that whale only give 100% self vote? Isn’t it better for us minnow to follow an orca who gives 75% upvotes to others?

Steemocean Vote Rank Table
If you click “Vote Rank Table” from the menu, you will have the similar picture as above. What does that mean? If you pay attention to it, you can see that those top 10 are whales with thousands of dollars worth per 100% vote. Furthermore, they are not selfish whales. Most of them are giving no self vote, they give 100% votes to others. Now, if I want to get upvotes from them, what should I do? Seeing their favourite categories, I should be blogging about life adventure from esteem app. Lol. I guess you now know how powerful this steemocean.com is.

Other suggestions for steemocean.com

Direct search bar

The menu bar is quite thick and has a lot of “empty” space. I think it would be quite nice to have a search bar directly attached on the menu so users can quickly search somebody.

Self Vote with percentage

On the home page Top 10 self vote, I think it would be necessary to put a percentage of the self-vote. A user could give 100% self vote and taking the money out of steemit, making it’s steemit account seems small. Another user could give 10% self vote and investing all into steemit while helping others via upvotes. Thus, I think an addition (not replacement, but addition) of percentage would bring the motivation of the self vote to the surface for public to see.

SteemOcean Top 10 Self Vote
This is an example from the current home page of steemocean.com. I have nothing against them. I’m just taking no 1 & 10 as an example.

RankUserSelf VoteUpvote Others
1adamkokesh41.24% = $1, 636.75758.76% = $2,332.101
10haejin74.40% = $453.64025.60% = $159.091

Now, again, I have nothing against any of these two users, I’m just taking the first and the 10th rank from the home page. But seeing the table, if my purpose is to get upvotes from any of them, I would follow and make adamkokesh as priority instead of haejin. That’s why having only monetary value is not enough, we would need percentage value of it.

Badges for upvote ranking

Steemit is a blogging platform. Steemians are bloggers. Bloggers like to have more followers. @ura-soul, why not create a badge similar that user could put on their blog to brag? Hey, here’s my badge showing that I 100% upvote other people, follow me!* It would be better if it could save the data more than one week. For example, “0% self vote in the last 3 years”.

Closing words

That’s my review of steemocean.com, the initiative from our witness, @ura-soul. It’s a good tool to see how the whales behave and which whales to follow. For my readers, don’t forget to vote for @ura-soul as a witness!
