Atlas is a card game for exploring urban places. It takes you to places you would have never found on your own, it gets you lost in places you thought you knew, and it encourages you to interact with the urban environment and the people in it in fun new ways.

It's 70-80% complete, but we need your help! We need more cards and fresh ideas.

All SBD rewards generated by this post will go to the contest winners.

Atlas is super exciting to me because it can be played in any city, whether you know the city or not. I've play tested it in New York, San Francisco, Portland, La Paz, Honolulu, and more, including my own neighborhood.

Check out the Contest Rules, How to Play Atlas, Sample Atlas Cards, and Suggestions for Entries below to play along. If this contest goes well, I'll keep doing it. If there's enough interest, I'll send people copies of the game once it's done.

Can't wait to see what y'all come up with!

How to Play Atlas

2-3 people play on a team together in an urban environment. The Navigator selects a card, the group does what the card says, then the Cartographer draws what everyone did on a map.

Once a complete turn has been recorded on the map, players switch roles. A different person draws a card and a different person draws on the map. At the end of the game, the group has made a map together, like the one we made for play test 2.3.A below. The game is over when all players say "Atlas."

Sample Atlas Cards

We have about 40 cards so far. I would like to make 10-20 more total to complete the game. Here are some ideas of what cards can do, and examples from the cards we all ready have.

Some cards tell you how to move about in the city, some tell you how to interact with a stranger (represented by the stick figure with a ?). Some cards have you perform an activity, find something in particular, or interact with the urban environment in different ways.

Here are some examples of cards we all ready have that have worked well and are fun to play.

Suggestions for Entries (what makes a good card?)

Atlas is all about encouraging people to explore urban environments while being present with their imaginations, emotions, and social selves in unfamiliar, fun and creative ways.

We want this game to be accessible to a lot of people, not just the most adventurous. Cards that are too scary or ridiculous or take people out of their experience of playing the game are not good cards.

Atlas is meant to encourage people to explore their own ranges of comfort and discomfort. Cards that offer opportunities to do this are great, especially ones that can be interpreted and played differently by people with different comfort ranges.

While a card might offer room for interpretation, the directions should be clear, not confusing. We don't want the thought "What am I supposed to do?" to take players out of the game.

We like clever titles. Descriptions should be as short as possible-- they have to be fit onto a printed card.

We like cards that encourage people to be aware of their bodies, their feelings, and how each are effected by the urban environment. We don't like cards that rely on players' technology, like smartphones, though we do like cards that draw players' awareness to the way that technologies influence their experience of traveling about.

Thanks for reading! Hope you have fun with this!

What a great game. I'm not sure what cards you all ready have but here it goes.

Woah. Did you draw that, too? Very nice suggestion, thanks for playing :).

Just so everybody knows, this entry would have also qualified in the form of just text e.g.

Title: Help a Fellow Out
Description: Do anything that may be considered a random act of kindness towards a stranger.

Just some free clipart and photoshop. :)

Well I was sure hoping you would get more suggestions.
If you will allow another entry...

I was hoping for more suggestions too. Maybe next time. At any rate, I'm really happy for your suggestions. Thanks for playing!

As it turns out, we have cards similar to the ones you came up with, which is very interesting. One is to "give a stranger a gift," but I actually like your "random act of kindness," phrasing a bit more, as it is easier to interpret in a non-material way.

At any rate, you are clearly the winner @doctorcrypto! You get all of the 9.556 SBD generated from this post, and I'm going to add a little and bump it to 15 SBD in thanks for your second entry, which came even after you were obviously the winner.

Thank you! Good luck on the game. Let me know when it's finished. Or the next time you are in Portland. I'd like to give it a try.
