Honestly I am still confused, especially after looking into another Prize winning photo, I could not find exactly what it makes... Sorry my inability orignorance..
I will learn more, Btw have a look at this photo, notContest oriented, but check if it will come underself Portrait category

I too believe the self portrait form can be defined easily to understand others. Many can interpret it in different ways, May be an own.painting to show the emotion/feeling/expression would probably make a self portrait in its true meaning. I think so.
Also good to hear that you also had some reservation about selecting few of your result with same manner I also might had been thought of.
Finally why cant' you think about another subject for your contest, like family pic or street side snap etc. Just some examples. In steemit there was even some contests with subject windows, steps, unused or redundt material etc.

I must admit that I was a bit mild towards the winner in the last week.
Portrait is a picture, photo or sculpture of only 1 person. But you can also view on your photo as a "multi-portrait" photo.
