Was Van Gogh a surfer?steemCreated with Sketch.

The most groundbreaking ideas evolve when you least expect them.

It´s an uncomfortable truth, but I am currently suffering from a so called surfer´s ear.
That circumstance unfortunately impedes me to touch sea water, thus to follow my passion.

Having plenty of extra time, I started doing a little bit of research about this specific disease. Along the way I accidentally developed a revolutionary conspiracy theory.

What if Vincent Van Gogh was a surfer?

A surfer´s ear

That´s how a phenomenon amoung surfers (or people who do any kind of sports in cold water) is called.

Our ear canal is made from the joins of a few bones of the skull. For some (still not scientifically discovered) reason exposure to cold water makes these bones grow.

It´s called 'exostosis' or abnormal bone growth.

Some of us have even spent so much time in the sea pursuing their passion that these bones have started to cause serious problems. It is a belief that the greater the exposure to (cold) sea water the greater the growth, but this theory has still not been proven.

Ususally, one ear tends to be somewhat worse than the other due to the prevailing wind direction of the area surfed or the side that most often strikes the wave first.

I am a goofy surfer, which means that my right foot is standing in front while surfing.

Therefore, my right ear is the one that touches wind and water first. Even though it´s my left ear that´s causing the main problem right now. Strange power of nature.

That´s Goofy surfing regular style:

Prevention

You would actually have to go a long way to come across a medical condition that is less understood and more neglected within a sporting community as a surfer´s ear.

Yes, wearing plugs is uncomfortable and somehow reduces your orienteering sensibility (which is quite important for surfing). However, wearing plugs stops cold water constantly flushing the ear canal.

Thank God techology is advancing quickly, because the pain in my ear really sucks!

SurfEars™ are plugs that seem to to leave ear infections and medical conditions like the surfer´s ear behind. They protect ears from water, cold air, dirt and bacteria while maximizing hearing and balance.

Vincent should have known these!

Maybe the big Vincent Van Gogh suffered from a surfer´s ear before cutting it off. It is said that it was his left one which means that he would have been a regular surfer and not a goofy like me. I wonder if he preferred surfing lefts or rights. According to his legendary paintings he was fallen in love with nature in general. That means that even if he wasn´t a surfer, we would have had a lot in common anyways.

Every time you find some humor in a difficult situation, you win :)

Wow, @surfermarly, you have a gift for teaching and humour! This is a very very powerful combo. I'm sorry to hear about your predicament, but the resulting effect for our community is a lot of healing and learning extravaganza. ;)

Thanks a bunch for your sharing, this is the sort of variety and quality I look forward to come across when I come here. Awesome! Prompt healing to you, keep your beautiful smile and taking good care, thrive on and namaste :)

Thank you so much for your kind words and great support @eric-boucher! I am really glad you enjoyed my little experiment. I had a lot of fun writing it to be honest.
And YES no matter what, that smiling will keep coming for sure ;-)
Enjoy your day!

You playfulness reverberated right through and I loved it! Namaste :)

It sucks when a way to relieve stress actually becomes the source of stress. I hope the plugs help.

These are my thoughts - thanks for your compassion! 🙂
Extreme sports always include a certain risk, seems that it's part of the deal.

Hey, Sweetie...

Not wishing to be contradictory; but if you put your left foot forward, that is called "regular foot."

"Goofy foot" is when the right foot goes forward...

Check this article...

Sounds to me like you may need some better informed surfers to hang ten with? ;) I volunteer...

Also, please do look into colloidal silver? In case some of the pain may be from an infection?

Here's hoping you're feeling much better soon! Take care!

Cheers! 😄😇😄

@creatr

Oh dear, it seems that my head already stopped working - LOL!
Must be the medicine (trying to find an excuse) :-D
Thanks for the correction. Then my theory about the goofy surfing Van Gogh would need to be adjusted. But still: it´s a left ear problem!! :-))
And YES I need to hang out more with you, haha
Big hugs

Also, its probably worth pointing out that Van Gogh didn't paint "the scream" (though he did paint starry night, which is the background of the mashup)

I´ve never said that he painted that :-) Plus: The title image is a collage, mixing up several paintings from different artists.
Seems that some people didn´t understand the humorous part of my post. I got even flagged for that reason.
Maybe I should stick with the more serious tags here :-)

I´ve never said that he painted that :-)

Yeah, i know. Im just a nit.

No worries...

Hugs, not drugs! :D

I´ve corrected my mistake. Goofy is surfing regular now :)
Thanks for the adding!

Wow! So you are goofy after all? :) ;)

Right foot forward, right on! :)

LOL - You are killing me, hahaha
I´ve always been. I was just so confused by this LEFT ear thing that I mixed it up in my post :-D
Less medicine might be a solution....
