What parents need to know about JULLS and Jenkem

If you are the parent of a teen and haven’t heard of the JUUL craze then you must be living under a rock.

These vaping devices are running rampant in high schools across America and getting a whole new generation of children addicted to nicotine. JUULs look like a normal flash drive making them easy to conceal, along with the small amount of vapor exhaled having a sweet smell that dissipates quickly, they can be used almost anywhere. Students are drawn to these vaping devices because they are designed to look compact and inconspicuous. You may have already found one in your child’s room while cleaning (snooping) and didn’t give it a second thought.

Similar to a cigarette, the JUUL device will provide the user with a head rush. Some teens say that it’s a mellow feeling, while others experience nausea. The sensation is actually a result of nicotine attaching to chemical receptors, forming an addiction. Many teens have stated that they didn’t even know that a JUUL contained nicotine until they were already hooked. The National Drug Agency suggests that if you come across a flash drive in your child’s possession to give it the “puff test”. The puff test is when you suck on the usb stick and see if you can inhale any vapor. You should check every flash drive you come across just to make sure. Many parents and teachers were surprised by finding JUULs hiding in plain sight.

If the fear of your child getting addicted to nicotine isn’t bad enough, the story doesn’t end there. The JUUL is made up of two parts: the stem and the pod. The pod is the part that is replaceable and normally contains the nicotine e-juice. Recently, kids have been refilling the pods with Jenkem (fermented sewage) and liquid THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) a combination which could become deadly.

Jenkem is said to have originated in Africa sometime in the mid 1990’s, street kids would ferment their own urine and feces and capture the fumes to produce an intense hallucinogenic high. Jenkem then made its way to America in 2007, being a legal, cheap high; it was appealing to both the intercity youth as well as the suburban mall rats. Although the high from Jemkem was extreme, it was also very short lived and the process of making it could be quite messy, so thankfully the craze died out quickly. Advancements in the marijuana industry have led to experimentation with liquid THC and Jenkem extract which then produced a much longer feeling of euphoria combined with the lower cost compared to vaping pure THC.

The street name for this deadly new concoction is Jenk-Juice and it has been gaining momentum with the American youth in 2018. David Pickwick, a senior at William G Totse High School, said he has tried Jenk-Juice. “Yeah I’ve tried it, that shit blew my mind. I started seeing colors and shapes floating in front of my eyes.” Pickwick said “My body felt very relaxed but I would get chills up and down my spine. The comedown was terrible but I still wanted to do it again.”

What really scares me is that if some of these kids are too dumb to realize that a JUUL contains nicotine than maybe they also don’t know that they could be smoking Jenkem. That could be a deadly mistake.
