How A Single Gmail Account Was Used To Leak Information Across The World & Baffled Governments!

An interesting story has come to my attention regarding how Gmail was used to leak information around the globe. This story was told to me by someone who should know.

The Gmail Draft Box

The crux of this story is really how it was possible to leak information around the world, not using the Dark Net, TOR Network or Wikileaks. This entire leaking process of valuable information was all done through Gmail.

It appeared that secret services in a specific country were baffled by how important state information was leaking to other countries across the globe. With all the attention on Wikileaks they looked into that avenue and searched high and low to work out how the information was getting out.

Government agencies were baffled by the continuing stream of information that was being leaked. Finally it seems that some cleaver sleuthing identified the source of the leaks as Gmail… Not an encrypted email service like Protonmail or Tutanota but Gmail. How were they managing it?

That Ol’ Draft Box Trick

Investigations into the matter discovered a simple but effective method of transferring and erasing information. The culprits of these leaks were using Gmail in an ingenious way. One member of the group would sign into a Gmail account and cut and paste the information into a blank email without any recipients. The information was then saved as a draft in Gmail and never sent.

After the information was uploaded a further member of the group would login to the same Gmail account with the same password on the other side of the world. They would then look in the draft box to access the leaked information.

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid…

The information was taken and the draft was erased. No email address was ever entered into the draft leaked message making it much harder to identify the culprits. This ingenious method of information leaking was used as for quite a long time without identifying any more than one compromised Gmail address. The messages were erased from the draft box and no other email addresses were used.

Although we all know that secret services are continuously spying on each other, I have to applaud the simplicity and ingenuity of the Gmail draft box form of leaking. The fact that the leaking went on for so long is an indication that sometimes using your brain and staying simple can be as effective as many of the other forms of the trick without overcomplicating the process. This simplicity assisted the culprits.
