Composting lawn trimmings and leaves.

in #composting7 years ago (edited)

I am sharing some of my gardening videos from you tube. Hope they are of some use for people who are interested. I've had compost bins as long as I can remember. It's a simple process if we just put the correct ingredients together.

A couple thing I forgot to mention. There is an old saying in the master gardeners groups not to outsource compost materials. That avoids making mistakes (for instance unknowingly adding strong herbicides into your finished product) but it's not always practical for everyone either. Try to use materials from your own property is all this means. Meat is also another thing not advised to add to compost. Composting manure works but it needs layered with a lot of carbon such as leaves or hay and be sure to keep a good air flow into the pile or they can become pretty foul if not done correctly but it makes a very good compost when it is done correctly. If the pile starts smelling bad it just needs more air flow or the ratios of materials weren't right. The pile may be staying too wet and that can cause anaerobic conditions. Turn it all and add some layers of what is lacking, usually it just needs more brown leaves or dried straw... but newspaper and cardboard works well too. If you're flipping and turning the pile it can be ready much sooner.
