We elaborate one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) models of media with self-repulsive cubic nonlinearity, whose local strength is subject to spatial modulation that admits the existence of flat-top solitons of various types, including fundamental ones, 1D multipoles, and 2D vortices. Previously, solitons of this type were only produced by models with competing nonlinearities. The present setting may be implemented in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. The 1D version gives rise to an exact analytical solution for stable flat-top solitons, and generic families may be predicted by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Stability of the obtained flat-top solitons is analyzed by means of linear-stability analysis and direct simulations. Fundamental solitons and 1D multipoles with and nodes, as well as vortices with winding number , are completely stable. For multipoles with and vortices with , alternating stripes of stability and instability are identified in their parameter spaces.

Rogue Quantum Harmonic Oscillations (1902.08823v1)

Cihan A. Bayindir

2019-02-23

We show the existence and investigate the dynamics and statistics of rogue oscillations (standing waves) generated in the frame of the nonlinear quantum harmonic oscillator (NQHO). With this motivation, in this paper, we develop a split-step Fourier scheme for the computational analysis of NQHO. We show that modulation instability excites the generation of rogue oscillations in the frame of the NQHO. We also discuss the effects of various parameters such as the strength of trapping well potential, nonlinearity, dissipation, fundamental wave number and perturbation amplitude on rogue oscillation formation probabilities.

We review the state of the art and recently obtained theoretical and experimental results for two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) solitons and related states, such as quantum droplets, in optical systems, atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), and other fields - in particular, liquid crystals. The central challenge is avoiding the trend of 2D and 3D solitary states supported by the ubiquitous cubic nonlinearity to be strongly unstable - a property far less present in one-dimensional systems. Many possibilities for the stabilization of multi-dimensional states have been theoretically proposed over the years. Most strategies involve non-cubic nonlinearities or using different sorts of potentials, including periodic ones. New important avenues have arisen recently in systems based on two-component BEC with spin-orbit coupling, which have been predicted to support stable 2D and metastable 3D solitons. An important recent breakthrough is the creation of 3D quantum droplets. These are self-sustained states existing in two-component BECs, which are stabilized by the presence of Lee-Hung-Yang quantum fluctuations around the underlying mean-field states. By and large, multi-dimensional geometries afford unique opportunities to explore the existence of complex self-sustained states, including topologically rich ones, which by their very nature are not possible in one-dimensional geometries. In addition to vortex solitons, these are hopfions, skyrmions, and hybrid vortex-antivortex complexes, which have been predicted in different models. Here we review recent landmark findings in this field and outline outstanding open challenges.

Stochastic ejection of nanocontact droplet solitons via drift instability (1902.09310v1)

Richard O. Moore, Mark A. Hoefer

2019-02-21

The magnetic droplet soliton is a large amplitude, coherently precessing wave state that exists in ferromagnetic thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. To effectively sustain a droplet, magnetic damping can be locally compensated in a nanocontact region that imparts spin-transfer torque; this has been successfully deployed in experiment to directly image the droplet and probe its dynamics electrically. However, theory predicts and experiments indicate the existence of a drift instability whereby the droplet is ejected from the spin-transfer-torque-active region and subsequently decays, an effect that may be enhanced or possibly induced by thermal fluctuations. Using soliton perturbation theory and large deviation theory, this work determines the soliton ejection rate and the most likely path an ejected soliton tracks in the presence of thermal fields. These results lead to an effective lower bound on the stability of magnetic droplet solitons in spin-transfer torque nanocontact devices operating at finite temperature and point to ways in which droplets can be made more robust.

Head-on collision of nonlinear solitary solutions to Vlasov-Poisson equations (1902.07472v1)

S. M. Hosseini Jenab, G. Brodin

2019-02-20

Nonlinear solitary solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson set of equations are studied in order to investigate their stability by employing a fully-kinetic simulation approach. The study is carried out in the ion-acoustic regime for a collisionless, electrostatic and Maxwellian electron-ion plasma. The trapped population of electrons is modeled based on well-known Schamel distribution function. Head-on mutual collisions of nonlinear solutions are performed in order to examine their collisional stability. The findings include three major aspects: (I) These nonlinear solutions are found to be divided into three categories based on their Mach numbers, i.e. stable, semi-stable and unstable. Semi-stable solutions indicates a smooth transition from stable to unstable solutions for increasing Mach number. (II) The stability of solutions is traced back to a condition imposed on averaged velocities, i.e. net neutrality. It is shown that a bipolar structure is produced in the flux of electrons, early in the temporal evolution. This bipolar structure acts as the seed of the net-neutrality instability, which tips off the energy balance of nonlinear solution during collisions. As the Mach number increases, the amplitude of bipolar structure grows and results in a stronger instability. (III) It is established that during mutual collisions, a merging process of electron holes can happen to a variety of degrees, based on their velocity characteristics. Specifically, the number of rotations of electron holes around each other (in the merging phase) varies. Furthermore, it is observed that in case of a non-integer number of rotations, two electron holes exchange their phase space cores.

Nonlocal symmetries, conservation laws, and recursion operators of the Veronese web equation (1902.09341v1)

I. S. Krasil'shchik, O. I. Morozov, P. Vojčák

2019-02-25

We study the Veronese web equation and using its isospectral Lax pair construct two infinite series of nonlocal conservation laws. In the infinite differential coverings associated to these series, we describe the Lie algebras of the corresponding nonlocal symmetries. Finally, we construct a recursion operator and explore its action on nonlocal shadows. The operator provides a new shadow which serves as a master-symmetry.

On the dispersionless Davey-Stewartson system: Hamiltonian vector fields Lax pair and relevant nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem for dDS-II system (1809.04225v3)

G. Yi

2018-09-12

In this paper, the semiclassical limit of Davey-Stewartson systems are studied. It shows that these dispersionless limited integrable systems of hydrodynamic type, which are defined as dDS (dispersionless Davey-Stewartson) systems, are arisen from the commutation condition of Lax pairs of one-parameter vector fields. The relevant nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problems with some symmetries for the dDS-II system are also constructed. This kind of Riemann-Hilbert problems are meaningful for applying the formal inverse scattering transform method, recently developed by Manakov and Santini, to study the dDS-II system .

C. Özemir

2019-02-24

This article is devoted to discovering Lie symmetry algebra of a (3+1)-dimensional Davey-Stewartson system which appears in the field of plasma physics. It is found that the algebra is an infinite dimensional one and of Kac-Moody type. Making use of these symmetries, some reduced equations to lower dimensions are also presented.

Analytic formula for the Geometric Phase of an Asymmetric Top (1807.03867v2)

Nicholas A. Mecholsky

2018-07-10

The motion of a handle spinning in space has an odd behavior. It seems to unexpectedly flip back and forth in a periodic manner as seen in a popular YouTube video. As an asymmetrical top, its motion is completely described by the Euler equations and the equations of motion have been known for more than a century. However, recent concepts of the geometric phase have allowed a new perspective on this classical problem. Here we explicitly use the equations of motion to find a closed form expression for total phase and hence the geometric phase of the force-free asymmetric top and explore some consequences of this formula with the particular example of the spinning handle for demonstration purposes. As one of the simplest dynamical systems, the asymmetric top should be a canonical example to explore the classical analog of Berry phase.

2019-02-21

Based on the diffeomorphism group vector fields on the complexified torus and the related Lie-algebraic structures, we study multi-dimensional dispersionless integrable systems, describing conformal structure generating equations of mathematical physics. An interesting modification of the devised Lie-algebraic approach subject to the spatial dimensional invariance and meromorphicity of the related differential-geometric structures is described and applied to proving complete integrability of some conformal structure generating equations. As examples, we analyzed the Einstein--Weyl metric equation, the modified Einstein--Weyl metric equation, the Dunajski heavenly equation system, the first and second conformal structure generating equations, the inverse first Shabat reduction heavenly equation, the first and modified Pleba'nski heavenly equations and its multi-dimensional generalizations, the Husain heavenly equation and its multi-dimensional generalizations, the general Monge equation and its multi-dimensional generalizations. We also constructed superconformal analogs of the Whitham heavenly equation.
