  • How Do We Create Competitiveness?

Harmless competition may grow into something proportionally big that may bring down nations. #Superiority over others is a trait that is nurtured by parents immediately a child is born. One expects the new born to be more #beautiful or #handsome than all the other #children in the #world. Our #expectations is for them to be the most #intelligent, #smart and #enterprising than most.

The quest for superiority does not get ensnared in the home setting only; #institutions of #learning do enhance it too. One has to excel in areas of #study and #co-curricular activities too. #Machinaries are put in place to search for and get the best. The best normally has to defeat others. They have to look superior.

The competitive and superiority driven person then enters into competitive #careers seeking competitive #personnel to fill them. #Interviews are contacted to pity one #candidate over the other.

With all these, a world of competiveness is created.

What Is Competition?

Wikipedia quotes-

The activity or condition of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others.

Competition is in simple words is a #noun denoting a #condition or an activity. The condition may be created in a home, school or institutions. #Contests to determine the superiority, excellence or prowess of an individual are designed. #Beauty #pergeants, #wrestling matchess and #writing competitions are all examples of such activities or conditions.

The main #objective of the activity or condition is striving to gain or #win something. Winning something becomes the driving force. It propells the #competitor. The #reward is the #fulcrum of the activity. Everything spins around the win. Winners will rejoice while losers weep. The losers will feel exasperated and angry that they never won the reward.

It is on this background that #malpractice may erupt. Like a #volcano, #magma will spill. It is this magma that this post is concerned with.

The last aspect of competition is #defeating or establishing superiority over others. Such may lead to #covetiousness, #greediness, #grabbing and other #vices. Cheating, eliminating competitors, #bribery may not escape an avaritious competitor.

What began as a simple competition begins to grow into immeasurable proportion. There is an #avalanche in the making.

  • Greed Borne Of Competition.

Greed is-

intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food.

The above #description from #wikipedia says it all. Greed is intense and selfish #desire for something. In competion, it becomes the win or reward.

Sometimes the win itself might not be as rewarding as the #popularity and #fame gained from it. #Awe and #adoration won through the competition may be quite satisfying to the winner. Yet, no, there arises an inordinate or insatiable longing for unneedeed excess. It may involve #power, #wealth, or #food. This is a #fruit borne of greed that is brought about by competitiveness.

  • Corruption Borne Of Competitiveness

Corruption is the abuse of public resources or public power for personal gain.

An individual or individuals may abuse #public #resources to fit into the competing world. Their search for recognition, power and wealth may lead them into corruption.

They may misappropriate the following:-

. Donations and charities

. Medical Aid funds and lottery money.

. Pension funds

. Money, goods, buildings, vehicles and other government resources.

Corrupting such government resources may weigh heavy on the #taxpayer. A corrupt person is #selfish ànd #egocentric. He only thinks about himself and his family. Being #philanthropic, #patroit and #nationalist is not in them.

#Jesus said:

"For What will it profit a man to gain the whole world and later forfeit his soul."

Mark 8:36

Jesus Christ did understand how futile it is to be competitive oriented. He understood there was something greater that power, wealth and being superior to all the others. He understood that man is a #mortal being. Finally he has to succumb to #death. Our lord knew that it was all in vain as you chase after worldly things. He wanted the focus to be on heavenly things.

Matthew 6:19-21New International Version (NIV)
Treasures in Heaven
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your #treasure is, there your heart will be also.

If you have kept your eyes on worldly treasure, then your #heart is in the wirld. Likewise if you keep your treasure in heaven, your world will be there.

  • Oppression

#Google has this to say -

prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority.

#Leaders or people in #authority will stop at nothing to look superior to others. They oppress others and even go to higher levels of uncouth ways in the name of looking great. All these have their roots in simple competitions that began early in #life.

They may have been losers and struggled hard to reach where they are. They may have harbored bitter feelings against the #human #race. Oppression became the only weapon to become even with them.

Oppression is a cruel or unjust exercise of power. Minorities were historically subject to oppression by those in power and, unfortunately, oppression still exists today and there are many examples of it.

http://googleweblight.com/i?u=http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-oppression.html&grqid=SKR__xeO&hl=en-KE

Some examples of oppression include the following:
A society says that women are the property of their fathers or husbands. Women are not permitted to wear clothing of their own choosing or to go anywhere without permission from a man. Fathers decide who their daughters will marry and wives must obey their husbands. This is an example of a society where women are oppressed.
A society exists where people of a certain race are denied opportunities and equality under the law. People within the disfavored race are not permitted to learn to read or to attend school. They have to live in certain designated areas and must do the jobs that they are told to do by the leaders of the society. The race of people who are denied opportunities are oppressed.
A society exists where people who believe in a certain set of religious teachings are considered to be inferior to others who accept a state religion. Those who practice their own religious beliefs can be punished or even jailed for their opinions and practices. In this society, the people who practice the forbidden religion are oppressed.
A society is under the thumb of a cruel dictator. Anyone who disagrees with the policies of the dictator can be killed for sharing his opinion and voicing the disagreement. The people of the society who live under the dictator are oppressed.
A society is controlled by a small percentage of very wealthy people. The wealthy people deny opportunities to those who are poor. The poor work for almost no wages and struggle to achieve a basic human standard of living such as having food and shelter. The poor are carefully controlled by the oppressors and prevented from organizing or resisting the will of the wealthy. This is an example of a society where the poor are oppressed.
A society carefully controls the freedom of speech of all people. The Internet is not accessible to the public, certain books are banned and the media works for the state and is permitted to write only the positive news that the state allows to be printed. This is an example of a society where the people who are under the control of the authority are oppressed.
A society allows migrants to enter its borders but will not grant them any rights. The migrants are not allowed to participate in the political process and are not protected by the laws that apply to citizens. The migrants can be forced to work for low wages and are denied basic services such as access to food and heah care. This is an example of a situation where the migrants are oppressed by the society.

The citing of such cases may only mean one thing, there are as many cases as there are situations in the world. Some cases do not just emerge from thin air, they are created by circumstances. Competition is one of them

As indicated above, such oppression practices may result from a background of competition. A man would not like to measured to women. Some #racial discrimination may result from competition too.

  • Impunity As Borne Of Competition.

This is another area worth of thorough #scrutiny. Impunity does not #evolve from #apes and #chimpanzees. It happens that some happenings in the concerned #people triggered it. Observing keenly, one will come up with the case of appearing superior than others. As we saw earlier, competition has such a role.

Impunity is

exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action.

A person may do many heinious #crimes against #humanity. #Homicide and #murder may be included in such crimes. Yet through manipulation and threats, the #peroetrators are exempted from #punishment. That is #jmpunity of the highest #order.

In the United States, the concept of impunity is often associated with such things as domestic violence, in which one spouse commits violence and abuse without fear of punishment. For example, Max is verbally abusive to his wife, Susan. He pushes, shoves, and violently shakes her, knowing she won’t complain to the authorities. In this example of impunity, Max acts, knowing he will escape punishment.

  • Anarchy As Borne Of Competition

#Dictatorship and anarchy are both the fruits of competition.

Here is the life history of Idi Amin, a Ugandan #president who was a dictator.

Idi Amin was the most controversial leader of Uganda. He served as the third President of the country from 1971 until 1979 and was widely regarded as the ‘Butcher of Uganda’ for his mass massacre of people. Before serving in the topmost position of the country, he had a modest beginning. Deserted by his father and raised by his mother, Amin dropped out of school at a very young age. In 1946, he joined the British colonial regiment and served in Somalia and Kenya. It was his sheer sense of determination, persistence and strength that helped him rise up the ranks to the post of the Afande or Warrant Officer, which was the highest rank for a Black African in the British army. He became a Commander of the forces and in 1971 he seized power by deposing Milton Obote in a military coup. Amin’s term at the presidency was marked by a period of immense disruption and annihilation. He expelled Asians from the country which further deteriorated the already-declining economy. He was essentially the reason behind the 1972 Uganda genocide which resulted in the death of more than one lakh people. Corruption, nepotism, human right abuse and political repression were at peak during his rule. International relations also suffered as he sought to develop alliance with Libya, Soviet Union and East Germany. Interestingly, he never received Distinguished Service Order (DSO) or a Military Cross (MC) decoration. Furthermore, he forcefully attained for himself honorary doctorate of law from Makerere University and declared himself as ‘CBE’ or ‘Conqueror of the British Empire’. Nevertheless, he self-proclaimed his title as ‘His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Alhaji Dr. Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE’. Scroll further to know more about his life and profile.

https://googleweblight.com/i?u=https://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/idi-amin-dada-1664.php&grqid=6osVA9CD&hl=en-KE

Idi Amin's #chidhood was a disturbing one. What he went through in life, including not having a good #education might have made him a competitor for #excellence, a trait that turned him into a dictator.

Here is more #information

Though there is no accurate information as to when was Idi Amin born, it is speculated that he was born around 1925 either in Koboko or Kampala to Andreas Nyabire, an Islam convert and Assa Aatte, an herbalist and diviner.
Abandoned by his father, his mother brought him up in the north-western part of Uganda. Academically, he attained his early education from an Islamic school in Bombo. However, he left the same when he was in fourth standard.

Anarchy

absence of government
b : a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority

Merriam-webster

People fail to recognize #givernment because the #governors are not functioning as per the wish of cimpeting individuals. Anarchy sets in.

Competition is something that parents and teachers should teach their children. There should be #healthy competition.

  • Final Word
Healthy competitition is whereby the competitors know that there must be a winner and a loser. The education should begin at an early childhood class. Children should see this enhanced by all the adults around them. Practice always makes perfect. We should actually be #role-models to our children. Awarding of rewards should alsi ensure that no participant is pitied upon.

Learning institutions should also enhance such in their #curriculum.

How To Cultivate healthy competition.

. Competition can create conflict between and among employees. Jockeying for limited resources may cause tension. However, when a team's members understand how to have healthy debate and share their opinions openly, competition becomes a catalyst for innovation and improvement. Teaching healthy conflict is the first step.

.Teach all the competitors to compete against themselves first. They should set their own #goals. When they break or achieve their goals then they should have a pat on the back.

. Learn to work in groups. When people win in groups, it fails to be an individual. That way the group congratulates each other whether they win or lose.

. Avoid pitying your children against each other. Do not compare them. Each child is unique in their own ways.

. Let children prosper in their own area if specialization. Not all the people can be #artists, #musicians, nor #carpenters.

Companies should cultivate corruption free #rules añd #regulations.

There should be counsellors who will always ensure that members of the company are guided in good #morals and#ethics. #Integrity should not only be a #principle but the best #policy.

#Chaplains should alsi be in companies to guide the personale on good spiritual practices. #Religion plays a big role in modelling #character.

The Seven Social Sins are:

Wealth without work.
Pleasure without conscience.
Knowledge without character.
Commerce without morality.
Science without humanity.
Worship without sacrifice.
Politics without principle.

From a sermon given by Frederick Lewis Donaldson in Westminster Abbey, London, on March 20, 1925.

another girl when she wants to hurt her.

I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain…

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’

‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’

What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

I’ve got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don’t want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.
