Hey Steemians....we're diggin' it!
If you've ever wondered how on earth we're going to crawl our way out of the dystopian rollercoaster we are all steemin' along on, and return to purposeful and meaningful community one has to take stock and firstly understand where we can make a difference. While the free media is the first one taking action in the front line of awareness, closely behind them are those who want to take some kind of physical action - which isn't just about marching against the status quo - but that is actively practising a grounded consciousness: a consciousness that, because it is practised, gains momentum and starts a groundswell of movement towards a healing of our divided hearts and minds. However, what the hell do we do to turn the runaway train around and to create a more robust and conscious community that perhaps human kind, has not experienced for centuries, if ever?
Defining Terms
Allow me to explain what I mean, at least, by robust and conscious community before I go on to explore what I mean by taking action to create it. No longer can we trust terms that could just as easily divide us as unite us. Therefore I would like to detail how I understand the concept of a robust and conscious community. By conscious, I mean awake to our identity as human beings - secure in the knowledge of our transient nature on this planet, and yet deeply rooted into our spirituality. From this standpoint we become aware that fear cannot control us if we are deeply at one with our spiritual identity. As a result of this, most of the way society currently operates is rendered pretty pointless because the superficial materialism which has captured the hearts and minds of the vast majority of people, is purposeless without a deep connection with the earth itself. Pretty things and jewels then only serve to divide us one from another and incite arbitrary differences based on fear and isolation.
By robust I mean, strongly rooted, tenacious, indestructible and immovable in the face of obstruction or objection. Having a deeply rooted spirituality into the soil and our identity as human beings, is essential if we are to stop the swell of destruction that is sweeping the planet from the natural world to the layers of dystopian conditioning that is being plastered across vulnerable consciousnesses, who are devoid of deeper meaning and dangerously susceptible to mind control.
And lastly community, this is the biggest challenge of all. By community I mean a community identified by the following features: lead by elders who have earned their place of respect, people of the community who care for and cherish each individual, people who have learned to share not just material things but hearts and minds, hopes and fears, medicine and spirituality, food and drink, stories, poems, theatre and music. A community holds together because it cherishes its members, because it holds together at a level beyond the physical, and it has learned that together it is stronger than apart. Disputes and arguments are settled quickly, hearts salved, minds honoured and souls recognised and embraced. I will write more about this.
Sometimes, the task seems almost impossible in amongst the 10 o'clock news and the political rhetoric of our times. And yet, without a vision of our own, at least as powerful and as single minded as those who have sought to destroy us over many centuries, nothing is possible. Will you join me in this vision? Will you help me shape it and nurture it?
Get Diggin' It
In sleepy Great Dunmow, Essex, UK I have raised my head above the parapet and started a little community interest company called Get Diggin' It - growing veg in other people's gardens. It started as a wild idea in the autumn of 2016, or so I thought, until I realised the idea had already been let loose in the ether. I discovered half a dozen other projects around the world doing almost the same. "There is nothing so powerful as an idea whose time has come" said Bernard Shaw. It came about as I contemplated how utterly disconnected as a society we have become from our soils and what real human behaviour looks like on the land. As a therapist, of nearly 20 years, and incidentally a Buddhist of 35 years, I had seen so many lost souls disconnected from themselves, from each other and dangerously ill and tired from having been corralled into mass society and in the process having lost their identity, as family and community members. I am often reminded of battery hens who, when freed from their isolation, are scared of the grass, of each other, and of the feeling of rain on their feathers, so disoriented and terrified by the open space are they.
What does it mean to be human?
In my deeper reflections I asked myself what is human behaviour? Is it about getting a salary and sitting down every night in front of a box of moving pictures, eating unrecognisable food out of plastic packages, and having, often, no other human contact except the sound of the mellifluous tones of a news reader, imploring us to baton down for the latest financial crisis? Is it about selling all your pretty years (courtesy Joni Mitchell) for money, and buying back the right to live in a house, to have warmth and water and food - and with the surplus buying the trinkets that the system convinces you is necessary for your happiness? Surely, being human has more meaning than this?
So I started this local movement of growing veg in other's gardens. It's gone from strength to strength though we are still fairly few working together. However, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna make a dream come true. Learning just how serious it is that we take up our heritage as human beings is a start to getting this thing moving. However, the project is designed for anyone to step in and benefit immediately - psychologically, spiritually and nutritionally...to name only 3! We're on www.getdigginit.co.uk and also on the facebook.com/groups/getdigginit. We want to attract to us people who share our vision, who want to do something to help us all come together again in numbers and for strength, to build a sharing and caring community that is based on a deeper human identity than the one we have been sold, and who is ready to have robust conversations with conscious community members who are ready to make it happen. We have a lot to re-learn and a lot of trauma to overcome collectively. What stuff are you made of? Want to join us?
