New... Communities

in #communities5 years ago

Communities and their benefits have been promised a long time ago by Steemit. Not as long as SMTs I believe - or maybe just about the same - but certainly we've been long awaiting for both.

It feels a bit strange to say this again in the #newsteem, and so close to both of them being completed, finally.

But even though they are close to their completion, we probably won't see Communities by Steemfest 2019 in November and SMTs on the mainnet more likely by the beginning of Q2 next year.

While Communities developed by Steemit haven't yet seen the light of day, we do have many communities on Steem. And as a friend remarked a while ago, we have Steem communties, not Steem community.

A form of communities started on discord many months or maybe years ago already (how old is PAL discord server?).

More recently Steemians started to organize on Twitter too, but more like one community trying to show the world what Steem is about.

Then the explosion of Steem-Engine tribe communities started. A little chaotic at first, maybe scary to some, I believe we've all gotten used to them and most likely have a few we prefer. And that was a good - maybe even great - rehearsal for SMTs, especially for regular users who will know what will SMT+Communities be like, more or less. So it will be less confusion.

We already have at least one tribe that I am aware of which has been created to fulfill the base purpose of SMTs: to link online businesses (or offline ones with an online presence) to Steem via SMTs. The link has been created earlier than SMTs were brought to life, via Steem-Engine tribes, but the purpose has been achieved. And the tribe is CTPTalk.com.

But that's not all. I've seen a surprising (for me) announcement yesterday. It was about introducing communities on 3speak.

As the post describes such a community, it's like a

Facebook group or Instagram page that curates and publish videos related to specific topics be it comedy, memes, politics, cats, about a celebrity, sports, science, language, country or basically anything

To create a community it's very simple, but to be honest I don't think I can put it in simpler terms than it has been described in the announcement.

By watching videos from a community you are interested in, you can more easily find content to curate and enjoy.

And that's not the only development in the direction of improving content discovery 3speak has been working on.

Citizen Journalists is another distinct section on 3speak which feature only authors who create this type of content and have been previously verified by the 3speak team under their program 3CJ.

Yeah relying on Steemit to launch it on time can be a bit of a gamble, but as was shown with the Steem-engine tribes, if they don't deliver there is always another way to implement it, thanks for a great post @gadrian.

True, although I wasn't really trying to make Steemit look bad here. I think they are trying more than in the past nowadays. Maybe competition brought that out of them, maybe the reality of low STEEM price and the necessity to keep (over)delivering to stay ahead.

Yeah they have been more active, although SMT's are still not here so they do have some catching up to do.

Great post about communities and tribes... They were a necessity, and Steemit developers were slow, so steem-engine tribes came in... And, maybe it looked scary, but every beginning is like that...

Now it looks much better, and when SMTs come, the switch will be easy... We have people, and they are the most important in the whole story...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

Yes indeed, people are in the center of building communities.
