COMMUNICATION IS PIVOTAL TO SUCCESS IN LIFE : TOPIC NO 3: BODY LANGUAGE

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION DEFINE WHO YOU ARE. THEY ALSO SHAPE AND CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY ARE USED AND ARE LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCCESS OR FAILURE. BEYOND YOUR ESSENTIAL POSSESSIONS OF QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EDUCATION, LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOLS OF YOUR LIFE.

THROUGH THIS SERIES, I WILL PRESENT TO YOU WHAT I HAVE LEARNED THROUGH LIFE AND RESEARCH SO I MAY IMPROVE MYSELF AND I HOPE IT IMPROVES YOUR LIFE.

BODY LANGUAGE

More than 90 percent of communication in non verbal. When LISTENING to someone try to do the following.

1. Focus on eye contact
2. Make agreement gestures with your face and eye brows. This includes nodding and raising eye brows at appropriate moments.
3. Make agreement noises such uh..hmm
4. Lean forwards just a bit into the speaker
5. Smile at times
   This builds rapport.

When SPEAKING try the following

1. Body posture should be relaxed and upright while sitting or standing.
2. Don't fidget, like drumming your fingers
3. Hold the chin up and look directly at the audience
4. Take your hands out of your pockets
5. Use your hands, use palm up and open position as much as possible. It imparts trust and cooperation.
6. Use palm down as less as possible
7. Never wag or point with your finger. You will not get cooperation

When MEETING SOMEONE, THE HANDSHAKE

1. Never give a limp handshake
2. Try to match the power of the others grip
3. We have all heard about the upper hand or dominant hand. If you are not a world leader and meeting a new acquaintance or a friend, then a light tap on the elbow or shoulder along with handshake can go a long way in building rapport.
4. Extend you palm out straight

Three hand positions: I suggest avoiding the giving control position at all costs

Although incomplete, and the list by nature can never be complete, I feel these are the basic and most important things for body language in day to day life.
