What causes addiction?
Stupid people cause addiction. See my proof below.
In the early 20th Century, it was a proven fact that heroin was addictive.
But in the 1970's some smart people thought, maybe addiction is caused by the environment the subject is in. So they moved Ricky the Rat to Rat Wonderland, where he would have plenty of places to play, plenty of friends and even lady friends!

Oh I need to add the the environment does play a role. In the Netherlands we have quite a liberal way of dealing with what everybody calls drugs (that is all the forbidden drugs excluding the non-forbidden drugs like alcohol and cigarettes). Research shows that we in NL have (much) less people having issues with (semi) illegal drugs than for instance in France where they have a more USA approach to illegal drugs. Because of NL liberal views on illegal drugs, there is much more opens in talking about it, sharing what you do with friends, and that increases social control much more, friends helping each other to keep things in control.
