The Rub: Daytripper is an appropriate name for a comic that requires at least 2 - 3 issues to really get to grips with, like a car that's veering off the road and needs to be stabilized. This is not to say that Daytripper is a slow starter by any means or chaotic to the point of senselessness, rather, its a slightly unpredictable story, always with subtle assurance that things are progressing as they should. Intrigue will set in after the very first issue and have you curious to walk through the dream like pages with the primary character until the story comes to a close. The comic follows the life of a Brazilian man by the name of Bras. An aspiring writer who pays the bills by writing obituaries for a newspaper.
Any further information would deprive readers of the opportunity to experience the uniqueness of this comic book across its 10 issues first hand. What I will comment on are some of its themes, namely; people, choices, life and death. The comic plays out like an illustrated multiverse theory, where all possible outcomes of choices are played out to their end. The art work helps the comic progress in a calm, relaxed and dreamy fashion, setting a mostly mellow tone that is reminiscent of a Sunday afternoon. Its interactions and realities are relatable and serve as reminder of how incredibly unpredictable life can be, that around every corner lies potential disaster. But it also reminds us that the beauty of life consists of the little moments that stay with us forever.
Daytripper offers up a picture of life without overly stating it. Every issue has something new to give, new choices to experience and new characters to interact with. It lays out its prescription for readers to do with what they will. Building up any piece of work like this is not always a good idea, as some may be disappointed in the finished product, but for those looking for something that doesn't follow the typical linear approach to story telling, give Daytripper a try. Happy reading :).
