"PREY" - the most secret Lovecraft comic, part II - a hidden message?steemCreated with Sketch.

Thanks to the effort of some commentators on my previous post about "PREY," we managed to find some more details about its author and artist.

The story is an adaptation of "Wentworth's Day" by Lovecraft & Derleth, adapted by Tom Skulkan, the head of Fantaco Publishing. Another name is mentioned in the credits: Oliver Morissette, but it is not clear what his contribution was. But one thing is certain, the (main?) artist is Jim St Denis. And he graced the book with some of the most unique and beautiful art I've seen.

This book is not in the classic comic format with panels and dialogue boxes. The lettering is part of the art, which is usually full page, like this:

By the way, the size of this book is also not normal, measuring 41x28 cm!! Not the classic bed-time reading, right?? Dialogue and art flows from "panel" to "panel" with no clear borders, even the page numbers at the bottom are drawn, not typeset. And the art style is unique, full with details and hidden meaning. Look at the bat-symbol at the old man's mouth, for example, or the car plate "12.12.68" - the date of the Nevada Nuclear Test in the US.

And where else have you seen dialogue boxes decorated like this one:

When the protagonist finds and read through the book "Seventh Day of Moses" mentioned in the pic above, the art style changes totally. The concepts become surreal and mix a twisted fantasy with a reality unbound by time periods. We see mechanical contraptions, gothic churches, and the mantis religiosa (preying mantis!) replacing the heavenly host and taking over the world:

I love how realistic the sailors look in that picture, near grotesque statues and giant mantises hatching from eggs, while the divine spirits watch through the open roof!

I won't spoil anything more about the book, there are some copies available in Amazon for anyone further interested. But I want to draw your attention to the weird signatures appearing in every page of the "Seventh Book" rendition, check the photos I posted here. Can there be a secret meaning to them or a hidden message? I plan to post them all in a future post for your conspiracy-ish/occult-ish/nerd-ish needs!
