Serious Seconds - Seriously Confused!

in #comics8 years ago

Good Sunday Evening To You All!

Yesterday, when I was writing up the piece for the Female Firsts article I realized that I wanted to do a second appearance piece as well. And no, not of the same characters as that might be a little boring and I think I only have Red Sonja's as far as that group is concerned.

I started digging through my boxes of comics and pulled what I thought would be a pretty respectable article. All of these characters, like yesterdays, hold pretty decent relevance on the modern scene. They've been on the bigscreen and all of them should see a return there. Some of them sooner rather than later.

Once I had the group pulled, I did a little research and well that is where things got a little complicated....I'll explain as we go through the pieces. So, without further ado........!

The Second Appearance Of Scott Lang As Antman!

Scott Lang.jpg That as Antman part is important, let me explain.....

Marvel Premiere issue 48

First off, let me just say that I really love this cover. This is what we have grown to love and expect out of an Antman adventure, it looks as if it were right out of one of Marvels storyboards for a feature film. I guess that's because this issue along with the previous issue, 47, were the rough basis for the first Antman movie. And yes, that little girl he is referring to is Cassie!

Here's the tricky part. This is the second of a two part origin story for the new Antman, Scott Lang, as opposed to the old Antman, Michael Dou....Hank Pym. Scott's first appearance, however is in an Avengers book, 181. So this is Scott's third appearance, but second as Antman. you with me still?

But I'm not going to let something like that stop me from owning Scott's second Antman appearance. I've enjoyed the character and Paul Rudd's portrayal in both movies so far and hope Marvel puts him right in there with the rest of the Avengers come Infinity War Part 2. According to a brief search on the Bay this could run you a few dollars for a low grade copy, but seems to settle in around 8.00 to 15.00 dollars. It also looks like it is frequently packaged with other semi-key books, which isn't a bad way to go!

Second Off For this Article We Have Hellboy!

Hellboy.jpg Again, his second appearance, or is it.....?

John Byrne's Next Men issue 21

I won't even pretend like I know anything about this book or the Next Men. In fact, that wiki link in the title there is, yeah, pretty much empty as well. What I do know is that I loved the Hellboy movies and am really looking forward to see what they do with the reboot starring Stranger Things, David Harbour.

Hellboy is pretty tricky to pin down when it comes to his first few appearances. This article does a far better job of breaking it down than I ever could. I'm happy to think of this as the true second appearance of Hellboy, and first in color! The muddled waters of Hellboy's creation will always still be there though.

So what is this book going for right now? Well, let's swing on over and take a look on the Bay. Hmm, looks like the movie news has had a bit of a price jump on it, maybe copies are drying up? Still it isn't a skyrocket, if one was so inclined, a decent copy of this book can be had for 50.00 to 100.00 dollars. If the new movie is a hit or there are any sequels that spawn (heh, we'll cover him soon) out of it, we could continue to see movement!

Thirdly, The Second Appearance Of Rocket Raccoon!

Rocket.jpg Triple Threat!

Incredible Hulk issue 272

First off, can I get an alright! for the cover! I know people love when a superhero has to fight his opposite.....but I love when the Hulk has to bang it with other big guys and this is a home run triple threat cover featuring the Hulk, Sasquatch and Wendigo! But, that isn't why we are here. We're here for everyone's favorite Guardian of the Galaxy, Rocket Raccoon! He's not, oh well, that's who we got.

And in keeping with ornery Rocket tradition, this second appearance isn't cut and dry. So, it can be argued that the first appearance of Rocket Raccoon was in Marvel Preview 7. This is a black and white preview book and he's going by the name Rocky, he is not the feature here. Most people accept the issue prior to the one I'm covering as his first, Incredible Hulk 271, where in fact he has taken the Rocket Raccoon name. So, yes, I believe that this makes this book his second appearance, even if it is just Hulk's flashback to the previous issue.

You love the Hulk and Rocket, you say? Well lets do a price check on isle 5 over here. Alright, looks like we're back in the 5.00 to 15.00 dollar range with this one, high grade books commanding a little bit more. Also looks like this can be picked up in various package deals for a pretty good price. Not bad!

Lastly, We Have Laura Kinney, AKA X-23!

x23.jpg This is a pretty great early X-23 cover, she has lots of good ones though.......

Nyx issue 4

Another great cover here, done by Joshua Middleton, who is enjoying a lot of success right now working on the DC Rebirth B covers. I love Laura Kinney, X-23, so it's no surprise I had to get her second appearance. Her first is a little out of my current price range but it is tops of a very long list. A Wolverine clone should be tough to get, right?

So this is the only uncontested second in the article today, there are no other books that may impede, or supersede this second in any way. Laura was in the Logan movie but it was a very young and movified version. I really do hope that they bring her back to the screen in the future as the slightly older more mature 20 something that she is in the comics today. Her All New Wolverine arc with her "sister" Gabby would be a great place to start!

Where do we stand price wise? Well a quick look shows our low end at around 20 and our high around 100 but it looks pretty reasonable to say you should expect to pay in the 40.00 to 80.00 dollar price range. Here again, it looks as if you can pick it up packaged with some of the lesser Nyx books, absent issue 3, her first appearance, as it was a short series.

Once again, if you haven't checked out the Female Firsts please do so and feel free to drop me a line in the comments either here or there. Anything anybody would like to see more of? Less of? Do I ramble, not in depth enough? Let me know!

Thanks again for your time and attention!
