MoPOP! Marvel and More on a Friday Afternoon
This afternoon my husband and I ditched work early to visit Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture. 😃
Yesterday my husband mentioned in passing that a new Marvel exhibit was opening at MoPOP. Today would be a special members only preview. I half assed suggested we take the day off to go, but being 9-5 office workers neither of us committed to my idea.
Jump ahead to noon on 4/20...
My office was DEAD today. Husband’s must have been dead too, because during a brief text check in at noon, we decided to cut out early and go adventuring. By 2pm he was at my office and we were headed to the museum.
Designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, MoPoP is covered with 21,000 stainless steel and aluminum shingles.
We visited four amazing exhibits including:
INFINITE WORLDS OF SCIENCE FICTION
STAR TREK: EXPLORING NEW WORLDS
and
the world premiere of the
MARVEL UNIVERSE OF SUPERHEROES.
Marvel
The exhibition features over 300 items from Marvel movies and comics.
I really like Marvel movies, though I know very little about the comics from which they are based. The Marvel exhibit had a great mix of movie memorabilia, comic history and photo opportunities. All of the big franchises were covered; Spider-Man, X-men, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, Ironman, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Black panther and the Hulk.
The first Marvel Comic released in 1939.
Captain America, created by writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby, debuted in March 1941.
Captain America costume worn by Chris Evans
Costumes worn by Danai Gurira, Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright in Black Panther
T’Challa
Ironman Costumes
Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy
X-men, 1978. Art by Dave Cockrum
Scared to Death
Fish tank of heads from the Govenor’s collection on The Walking Dead
The next exhibit we visited was Scared to Death. This collection features pieces from the world’s greatest horror films.
Mike Meyers: Halloween
Jason: Friday the 13th.
Critter: Critters II
Alien
Science Fiction
The Infinite Worlds od Science Fiction exhibit has been opened at MoPOP for a few years. It features a hodgepodge of items all the way from Star Wars, to Dr. Who to Mork and Mindy.
T-1000: Terminator
Dalek: Dr. Who
Greedo: Star Wars
Star Trek
To boldly go where no man has gone before...
Well if my husband was excited for Marvel, I was actually MORE excited for this... STAR TREK exhibit! This was on my list of things to see, but I had TOTALLY forgotten about Star Trek being at MoPOP. All of the TV shows and movies were covered. There were costumes, a life sized bridge, models of the enterprise and TRIBBLES!
Borg Piccard
Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!!!
Desert sexy Kirk
Did someone say TRIBBLES?
All the space ships
Spending Friday afternoon playing tourist was a lot more fun than sitting in my office.
After the museum we had late lunch/early dinner at a spot called the Armory. Then we strolled past some iconic Seattle sights before heading home.
International Fountain at the Seattle Center
McCaw Hall
The Space Needle (I worked as an elevator operator/tour guide here for one month in 2001.) The job had it’s ups and downs... 🤪😂
Amazing post! Made me strongly consider the possibility of flying to Seattle just to go to MoPoP. Thanks.
@ronaldoavelino, do it! 😃 Aside from those exhibits there are also huge sections on music, Seattle bands (Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana etc), Fantasy (think princess bride, wizard of oz), there is a sound lab where you can learn to play instruments. Always a lot on offer. ☺️
My buddy just went there this weekend as well! I am up north near Everett. Been meaning to go to the Funko HQ, and haven't been to this place since it was still the EMP
@saywha,

What an amazing place! I would love to visit this museum some day soon.
Hi @joechiappetta,
Glad you enjoyed the pictures. It really is a fun spot to visit. I hope you get to see it in person sometime.
I wanted to go when I came out there last year for the first time to attend the Funko HQ opening but I didn’t make it. Bummed me out. Next time!!!
