RE: Michael's Long Box: ANIA and the Forgotten History of Afrocentric Comics Publishing

in #comics6 years ago

Your level of comics journalism never ceases to impress! Very interesting, you’ve got me curious to learn more! If they were just getting started in ‘93, I can only imagine ANIA may have just fallen victim to the implosion of the comics market beginning around then. The timing of their debut may have just proven fatal.

Thanks so much, @bryan-imhoff. I get the suspicion that you're right: ANIA showed up just before the industry pulled a "hold my beer" and dove off the cliff. It likely was bad timing, more than anything else, that laid them low. More's the pity, since from the videos it seemed like these stories generated multi-cultural curiosity at least, if not multi-cultural interest, from comic book readers at the time, given the response of the kid interviewed at 1:55 in the first video.
