The Comic That Has Come Back to Haunt Me
One of the reasons I love the San Diego Comic Con is the amount of purely awesome shit you get for Free!!! Tons of promotional items shilling for new and upcoming Comics, tv shows, movies, games, and so much more. Hats, pins, keychains, posters, t-shirts, light up pens, flasks, sunglasses, and variant cover comics are some of the various types of items that are passed out there. Today I’m focusing on one very special comic that we got in 2009 at the San Diego Comic Con. I don’t even remember how we ended up with these but we got a few of them.
It’s the Uncanny X-Men #510 J Scott Campbell Partial Sketch Variant. Which is the partial sketch variant of the color variant. That was available for any and all stores to order as a 1:15 incentive. That just means that for each and every chunk of 15 regular copies they ordered, they could order 1 Color Campbell Variant. This is still a $150 book to this day.
But the Partial Sketch was different. It was only given out to select people throughout the Convention. The word is that 1 case was printed which would be a couple hundred books. For the most part, it’s a ghost and rarely ever pops up for public sale.
Nobody really cared for a long time. I think we sold our copies for around $30 bucks a piece. It was free money and 8 years back, there was 0 buzz on it. Today...that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Before I get to it’s rough worth, the reason I’m discussing this today is because one of the copies I sold 8 plus years back for $30 bucks, walked back into my store today. The gentleman who purchased it almost a decade ago decided he wanted to get it graded through CGC and wanted us to submit it for him. He seemed super impressed with his purchase and while I’d love to have the book again, I’m also happy that he made a solid purchase that’s bearing tasty
fruit all these years later. That’s pretty awesome to see.
So as of right now, there is only 1 listing for one of these on eBay. That’s it. It’s a CGC 9.6 and the buy it now is at just over ten thousand dollars!!! It’s not selling for that but it wouldn’t surprise me too much if it did.
Here’s a biggie. One ended up selling at the end of September. It sold for thirteen thousand dollars!!! In fairness it was a 9.8 and signed but still ridiculous.
If I had to guess by looking at it, I’d guess a 9.2 which would bring in $5000 plus at an auction. Not bad for a $30 investment. Below I circled a few small areas of concern. These are some of the things and imperfection that graders will be looking for. See if you can tell.
Either way, it was good to see it back in the shop, albeit only for a few days before it’s sent off for grading. Good luck my friend! I’ll update when it’s slabbed and graded.

Holy hell... I know you’ve told stories before of discovering sweet items you forgot you even had as you explore the cavernous catacombs of loot you’ve acquired... so here’s hoping a half dozen of these turn up beneath 50 copies of Archie vs. Predator somewhere in that back room!
Oh man, I would really love that but I know we only had a handful of these to begin with. There’s a slight possibility of finding one in the X boxes in the back but that would even be pushing it. One can dream though.
Crazy part is my buddy Mike is the guy who sets up Marvels booths at NYCC and SDCC. He houses all the equipment and is responsible for distribution of the promo items and signings. I wonder if he has a smattering if these in his warehouse and is unaware. I might bring it up to him one day and see.
Adventures of Superman #500 is a book that I ya Have a gazillion of. White bagged dogshit.
Hindsight says it would be awesome to just stockpile three of everything for the future, but practicality says that the warehouse space you'd need would be uneconomical....
Oh man...we’d have a warehouse of 90% dogshit. Lol. That’s the sad reality of this biz. A large portion of books are forgettable and difficult to move down the road.

Lol. Probably. YeH it’s crazy what some of these modern grails go for. Amazing Spider-Man #667 Dell’Otto Variant is probably the grail to have. It’s the most I ever personally spent on a comic for myself. There hasn’t been a public sale for one in over a year. Nutty book.

ha! howdy again sir blewitt! totally amazing stuff there, so the bottom line is that you need to save everything you ever get and keep it in perfect condition. But you can't do that because you gotta make a living selling it!
