Arsenic Lullaby- Illustrating under the influence of painkillers and alcohol

While looking for some files I ran across a picture of some sketch-cards I did. The story behind them is as follows. About an hour or so before the opening of Comic-Con International a few years ago I sliced my hand open with a box cutter. It was pretty bad...even by my standards. Since this is an important show and one that involves an investment of around 7000.00 USD there was no time to go to the hospital. We wrapped it up with whatever was available and continued setting up the display and I worked the first day signing autographs and doing sketches leaving smears of blood and cursing the pain.

That night in the emergency room I got the required 13 stitches and a prescription for painkillers. I was not about to take any painkillers while the convention was going on for fear I might spend the precious time in a drug-addled haze rather than making sure the convention pays off.

That left me with a nice big bottle of painkillers to do with as I pleased once the weekend was over and I got home...

The results are why I try not to have free time.

I noticed the painkillers had the usual warning label “don’t take with alcohol ” “will impair motor skills” ect. So…I decided to put that to the test. I took the prescription (well...a little extra, I earned it) and then every 15 minutes took a shot and drew a sketch-card.

FIRST...lets look at the image I was attempting to duplicate. It's an alternative cover for Arsenic Lullaby "The Big Stall".

SO...it's a complicated image, but one I worked on and re-did a bunch of times so I was pretty familiar with it and it's a simple composition that's not as hard as it seems to make look fairly badass. Here's how I did/progressed...

Keeping in mind it's only a 2 1/2 x 3 1/3 sketch...I hung in there pretty good until around attempt no.7 and attempt no.13 actually looks pretty cool. Unfortunately I had to bow out before I could manage an attempt no.14.

Anyways....
