Back in 1997 a 17-year-old Swedish student named Daniel Malmedahl sat down at his computer and recorded himself making the now-familiar noise in an attempt to imitate his friend’s moped engine.

However, it wasn’t until 2003 that the noise began to spread when Daniel’s friend Erik Wernquist uploaded it to a website with the title The Annoying Thing.

After two years of sharing The Annoying Thing with the internet, ringtone company Jamster contacted the two of them asking to sell the creation as a download for phones.
