A Profession That I Never Thought Was In Jeopardy Of Going Extinct

in #comedy6 years ago

I never thought that Comedians would be looking for a new career. Comedians are now facing a, never before, change in society where their jobs are at stake. With all of the "political correctness" and "safe space" audience members of today, comedians are finding it difficult to practice their profession.

I have even seen prominent comedians taking out advertising minutes to explain the problems they are facing, while trying to do stand up comedy. Jerry Seinfeld is quoted as to not performing at College University venues, due to the social justice warrior attitudes of the audience. People literally can not take a joke anymore. Humor is being lost in our society. When you can no longer joke and laugh, troubles are just around the corner.

Puns and Stereo Types in general, have provided the base of many jokes or funny observations. The entire premise, is for people to be able to laugh at themselves, their race, gender or culture. Humor is designed to release tensions and unit people in laughter. Humor provides an ever important release value for society, community and cultures. Without humor, we are in trouble.

I do feel for the plight of current comedians. It is like they have to walk on egg shells. The days are gone for comedians like Red Fox, Richard Prior, George Carlin and Sam Kinison.

I am afraid that the "old school" comedian is now an endangered species. Perhaps they should be put on the governments protection list so that over time they can bread and come back strong like the American Bald Eagle did.

Jesters traditionally have been one of the few members of society able to candidly speak truth to power... You definitely highlight the canary in the coalmine, or the "winter in America" when you elucidate the lack of such critical social commentary, and the dwindling of societies prophetic icon figures. Where are the radical voices in comedy today? Where is this generation's Bill Hicks??

Exactly. The Bill Hick's are missing. This is a dangerous sign for society. You are very observant and spot on with your comment.

Times are changing in our world now. I am also afraid that kids today are so vulnerable in being corrupted because of social media and the Internet itself. The evil powerful government uses all things to make the people think what they want to think as well, it is a dangerous world.

That is true. Governments, entertainment, sports, colleges, and other societal forces all are geared to molding us in certain direction and thought of mind. So few see this and are able to resist or break free. Good comment. Thank you
