It Is The Largest Comeback In NFL History
The Buffalo Bills found themselves trailing 35-3 after an early third quarter pass from Buffalo quarterback Frank Reich was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Houston defender Bubba McDowell. After that Oilers touchdown, fans started to leave the stadium as they assumed that the Bills were going to be beaten into oblivion. Little did fans know that kicker Steve Christie would win the game with a field goal in overtime to send the stunned Oilers home for the season.
The Game Was Blacked Out In Buffalo
Interestingly enough, the game was blacked out in Buffalo despite the fact that it was a playoff game. NFL rules state that all games must be sold out within 72 hours of kickoff to ensure that a game is seen in the local broadcasting area. This meant that thousands of fans would flock to bars that had national feeds of the game or feeds coming from Syracuse. At the time, the Syracuse NBC affiliate could be picked up over the air in some parts of the blackout zone. Unfortunately, the NFL since closed the loophole. Today, anyone living within a 75 mile radius of the stadium is unable to watch the game on TV.
