Timeworn and Weather-Beaten, but Still Colourful and Beautiful … Chiang Mai – Colourful Photography

As per my previous post on the subject, spirit houses such as this one are located everywhere in Thailand.

Shiny new ones

The most prominent spirit houses are the large, new ones. Usually situated outside a new office building or a mall, they are strong, sturdy, well-lacquered, and rather shiny.  

Weather-beaten, time-worn, colorfully decorated ones

But the big, new, shiny spirit houses are far outnumbered by the small, old ones. Those smaller ones are generally found at the entrances to homes, many of which are a few decades old.  Consequently, those old spirit houses are often quite weather-beaten, time-worn, dilapidated, and even a bit rickety.

Nevertheless, they are almost always taken care of, and in fact, well-tended. Rarely are they allowed to fall into complete disrepair. There’s often some ritual offerings on the nearby tables, as well as some pleasing decorations, such as garlands of flowers or colorful fabric drapery.      Previous post on same subject – "All Watched Over … "   _{(right-click on title)}
