I'm sure you have heard the old saying. Something is going great in your life. Perhaps, a new promotion at work, a new car, or a new girlfriend. Life couldn't get any better.... "life is a bowl full of cherries."

This old saying has been around for almost a century to explain all the pleasant events in life into a single metaphoric sentence. It has been the basis of a song for many famous artists such as Judy Garland and Doris Day. The original song was made by Ray Henderson and lyrics by Lew Brown, published in 1931.
This expression is also used just as commonly in the opposite meaning as well. Or, sarcastically. There is a movie named "The War" , made in 1994, where it is stated appropriately in the opposite by a young oppressed girl.
She says the lines "life is a bowl full of $&^!." Great movie, underrated.

All in all, like many things in life, there can be more then one meaning to everything. There is no definite. Your suffering may be one's pleasure. Or something is so bad in their life that to have something you think was terrible would be a lift off their shoulders.
"Don't forget to walk a mile in another man's shoes."
