BLACK ASPER BAMBOO 'BETUNG HITAM' (COLORCHALLENGE GREEN THURSDAY)

in #colorchallenge6 years ago (edited)

The Black Asper is a rare, specialized variety of bamboo, for collectors and bamboo enthusiasts. It is a type of giant black bamboo, and has a velvety grey effect on the culms, that makes it look truly unique. A non-invasive, clumping bamboo,
it has large leaves, but not much foliage on the lower part of the culms, so it looks very neat in appearance, with clean stems. It comes in a beautiful green colour as well.

Also called Dendrocalumus Asper, or ' Betung Hitam', it originates in Indonesia. ' Hitam' is the Indonesian word for black. This is the largest growing black bamboo in the world, it can grow to 30m, with a culm size of 30cm. Drought tolerant once established, and can with stand frost to -5 degrees celsius. Its shoots are edible and can be used for cooking.

Bamboo is sustainable and environmentally friendly, and is stronger than any hardwood. It takes seven years to grow a clump, and you can harvest three to six culms per year, for around one hundred years. Hardwood takes one hundred years to harden and be usable. The Black Asper remains black even after drying, which makes whatever is built out of it, exceptionally beautiful.

The Black Asper stands out as a real feature in any garden, but looks amazing as a single feature on a large rural property, because of its impressive size.

The above photo shows the immense size, in comparison to our pony, horse stable and surrounding trees. The new shoots are towering above everything else around them, as they are beginning to open.

So beautiful! What is your climate like? You really have gotten me thinking about growing bamboo like this

Where we are is technically sub-tropical, but my parents live inland and get a lot of frosts in the winter. The bamboos aren't bothered by this at all, some can handle -5 degrees. They get plenty of rain where we are, but bamboos are drought tolerant as well.
I looked online and found this grower in South Africa, they seem to have a lot of the unusual kinds and will courier smaller plants. sabamboofarmer.blogspot.com You never know, maybe you can split and sell bamboos as well as succulents.

Thank you, I did see that. I will definitely look into it. I don't know if I would want to sell bamboo but grow some for privacy and to hide the ugly wall, definitely.

Beautiful bamboo

These look like big mamas. My neck really does hurt looking at the photo. They are really beautiful. Especially how you captured them in the first shot.

Yep, definitely big mamas! I always think of what you said with the chiropractic appointment when i'm photographing them, specially today, because I really do have a sore neck.😁

hahaha time to go for a neck and shoulder massage.
