Hip Monday
My contribution to #mondayred colorchallenge hosted @Kalemandra.
Roses are not only grown for the beauty and wonderful frangrance but their benefits go on long after the fading of the blooms.
Rose Hips
Hips start to form on the rose bush after pollination and form fully by late summer or fall. The colors range from orange to red but can be a darker shade in some species. It’s best to wait until after the first frost to pick them- the frost softens them.
The rose hips contain the seeds or fruit of the rose bush which can be used to make a variety of foods, such as, jellies or for a syrup. The hips contain much more Vitamin C than an orange. A common use of the rose hips is to make a simple tea which would pack a vitamin C punch.
One Easy method used by my grandmother to make the Rose Hip Tea.
Pick the rose hips.
Wash and cut off stems.
Place a heaping cupful of the hips in a non-aluminum* pan.
Cover with 4-5 cups of fresh water.
Bring to full boil and then let steep for 10 minutes.
After you strain the mixture, the mild fruity tea could be sweetened with honey or a sweetener of your choice. If refrigerated, the tea will keep for 3 days.
Enjoy The Healthy Rose Hip Tea
For centuries rose hips have been known for their healing properties. They have been crushed and used for traditional folk medicine by our native people.
Want to improve your complexion? Soak the rose hips for 3 or 4 weeks in olive oil and use the potion to apply to your face every morning or evening.
*Aluminum dissolves easily and when using older pots can be absorbed into the food.

Those are a vibrant red and I bet they are good in tea. :D
Thanks Deb. They have a nice tangy taste.
Thank you @redheadpei for this Post. You know I've never heard of this plant/fruit. But it sounds like it has some properties that are of good use. Something I would like to try.
Thanks again .
Thanks @roberandrew. Definitely try some. They are good for you . Make sure the rose bush hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides.
This brings me back to childhood when we used to have rose hip syrup. It was my favourite drink - can't get it anymore. I thought to try making some myself but my rosehips don't look like that they are kind of orange and I don't know if they are any good.
Thanks Andy @andysantics. I think any kind of rose hips can be used for the syrup. Wait until the frost hits them to make the syrup - this softens them. The hips are backed with so many vitamins and a drink or tsp every day in winter would help ward off colds.
That caught my attention. Thanks for the post @redheadpei. I don't think I've come across rose hips before now. I will find out if it's in my locality.
Thanks @emjoe. If you have roses in your area, then there would be rose hips on the plant . They start to form at pollination and ripen in fall. Yes, the hips are full of vitamins.
Ok, thanks for the info.
Wonderful post. I drink the tea for my colds!
Thanks @mcoinz. Probably the best medicine.
Beautiful rich reds
This brought back memories of my mum she was a big fan of rose hip tea
Thanks! Your mother was a wise woman @tattoodjay.
