Colorchallenge: Monday Red

in #colorchallenge7 years ago

These are ordinary red geraniums but their sheer velvety redness never fails to catch my eye. The plant in my garden never makes full heads of flowers, just three or four at a time, like you see here because it is probably too hot and dry. Although they are usually called geraniums, they are actually members of the pelargonium family and native to South Africa. While hot and dry is what most South African plants are used to, this is a cultivar, meaning a plant that has been bred to alter its natural characteristics so it would probably prefer more water

Geraniums are among the easiest plants to propagate, all you need do is cut a section of the stem and leave it in a glass of water for a while. It will make roots and it can be planted into soil

Great color!
I have a lot of red geraniums. I sometimes get to the funniest: if a little different shade of red, then I buy.

Great information!

This is also one of my mom's favourites, since I was a child, and got to see them flower only a few times in my entire life. This picture is a total treat, thank you!!!

Namaste :)

This reminds me of a plant we use to have outside. When I was little, my parents told me this plant you could just pick off the little parts that grow and plant it in soil and it will grow. So I did. I picked and planted, picked and planted many MANY times lol. Our garden was then infestive with this plant. Now we don't have anymore of them hahahaha

So there are green thumbs hiding in there somewhere

hahahaha 😉

My grandmother grew geraniums in flower pots on the windowsill near the window. She really liked these flowers.

I think that all our grandmothers did

Absolutely love geraniums, especially the red. How deep should they be planted although here in Canada it is not quite planting season yet. Is there a way to have them live through the winter? Thanks for the article.

I always plant something at the same level it is in the pot I got it in. If planting cuttings that you rooted, deep enough for the new roots to be covered and the stem to be stable but don't bury the stem completely. Mine stay in the ground all year round but then again, I don't get snow. Most people with foul winters keep their plants in pots and bring them indoors over winter

I love how vivid and deep red it is. They are a great and easy plant to grow.

Love this shade of red, and it sounds great how easy it is to propagate.

The colour looks super crisp. I think this a great example of the red colour for the colorchallenge. Some people don't get what red looks like..haha
