COLOR CHALLENGE: TUESDAY ORANGE - FIREWINGS IN MY GARDEN

BEGONIA FIREWINGS

This flower is called Begonia Firewing and it´s been in this hanging pot for 3 years or 3 summer seasons in a row. It´s said to be the most vigorous and really the top performing type of all Begonias. Their stems or trails are succulent like and they have the most stunning orange flowers throughout the season. When the summer season ends and it´s cold outside sometime end of September...that´s the time I take the pot inside the house. The whole stems or branches are cut so short that ´s just about the level of the soil.

I keep the whole soil moist throughout the winter season by putting some old shirt cut into strips and place around it like a coil … this system works and when we´re away in Winter, they are irrigated slowly. The pot is standing on a can that holds the pot like a podest and placed in a basin that gathers the excess water. That way, roots will not get damaged when they´re drained in water. It´s very low in maintenance and they are absolutely robust. I do hope that this will still grow again next season because it´s said to be perrenials... the biggest surprise every Spring is whether they will show that green stems that pops up in the middle of the soil. I hope for the best and am crossing my fingers.
