Monochrome Monday: If you aren't handicapped please don't use the handicapped stall.

in #colorchallenge7 years ago

I worked at a very large law firm for over 10 years in the Litigation Department. .

There were 80 people in the litigation department and there were also 20 people in the MIS Department.

The reason for the large MIS Department was because there were multiple floors to this law firm and multiple different departments.

The first floor only had one bathroom for ladies and one bathroom for men.

They were at the end of a very long hallway right by a square white break room complete with vending machines and microwaves.

The men's bathroom had three stalls in it.

There were two very cramped broom closet type stalls that would make even a small dog claustrophobic.

The third stall was a handicap stall which was huge and luxurious.

This handicap stall had a magazine rack, multiple trees, some bamboo....... it was pretty much an oasis.

If you had to use the bathroom you would immediately head for the handicap stall.

Fortunately for us there were no handicap people at all in the entire law firm so we never had to feel bad about using it.

Until they hired Albert that is.

Albert was the first and only handicapped person that I ever knew at that law firm.

He had to use the handicap stall to go to the bathroom no matter what..........he could not use the urinal.

People don't change quickly though so most folks continued using the handicapped stall and just hoped that Albert wouldn't come into the bathroom.

Of course this was cruel to Albert and most people didn't think of him and that he might be sitting outside of the stall in his wheelchair without recourse.

Eventually we were all told that there would be serious repercussions for anyone using the handicap stall.

I never did use it once Albert started for fear of upsetting him..........but most of the other people did.

One thing I never understood though is why decorate it to look like an oasis on the inside....... if we weren't supposed to treat it like an oasis?

Have you ever felt guilty about using the handicap stall?

I hope you liked this one.

Thank you and I appreciate your upvote.

My first wife was diagnosed with MS in her early 30s. She required a wheelchair. Prior to that, I didn't give much thought to issues of handicap accessibility. I quickly saw the problems it presents and the general lack of awareness or concern that your post touches on.
