Colorchallenge Thursday Green: my garden
A couple of years ago I was really into gardening and luckily there was a lot of rain that year so my garden grew like crazy! The corn next to me is a testament to my success that year. I can't really take all the credit though as mother nature is what helped the corn in the picture grow to over 7 feet / ~2 meters tall that year in just a few months.
I've since greatly cut back on what I grow in the yard each year as I have less time now and the animals seem to love the corn and a few other kinds of crop so it's nearly impossible to keep them from it. The past 2 years I've stuck to growing things that the local critters (rabbit, squirrels, birds, etc) don't seem to be as interested in.
Wonderful! Ahh brings back memories of going to a 'Pick it yourself' farm when I was little and picking lots of juicy sweetcorn. (Also discovering that raw sweetcorn is very sweet and very delicious!)
It really is better when it's fresh out of the garden. I've only had one year when the animals didn't all but destroy my corn crop before it was ready. But when we did harvest some that year I couldn't believe how much different it was than when it's bought at a grocery store. I got the seeds from a seed exchange that specializes in heirloom seeds and preserving biodiversity so it wasn't the regular stuff one would buy at a garden store or maybe Home Depot. I'd never tasted anything so sweet (as far as corn is concerned anyway).
