Our garden is too modest to provide the number of cukes we need each year for sour-brine pickling, so I bought a mess of them at the farmer's market. One step is to make sure they're clean before their fermentation begins. This picture turned out especially pretty, and I thought I'd give the ColorChallenge a try!

They turned to mush. The flavor was great, but the whole batch went into the compost. I was pretty blue about it for a while. I think that trusting the airlock on the vessel to protect them instead of making sure the produce was immersed in the brine was a terrible call. I was unable to source another batch of cukes before the season passed so I'll have to wait for next summer to try again.
